Mass Cultural Council is proud to support Massachusetts artists through Artist Fellowships. As a state agency, we receive an annual appropriation from the state Legislature, and many details of the Artist Fellowships, such as the award amount and the application calendar, are contingent upon the annual state budget process. This is because the Agency cannot develop a spending plan for the fiscal year without knowing the total amount of state funding it will receive.
Mass Cultural Council Public Affairs Director Bethann Steiner recently wrote an update about the fiscal year 2021 state budget process. In short, the COVID-19 crisis has added significant delays to the state budget timeline. In an ordinary August, we would be preparing to announce dates, deadlines, and guidelines for the upcoming cycle’s Artist Fellowships. But because of the state budget process delays, the Artist Fellowships (and all Mass Cultural Council grant programs) are currently paused.
We will announce news about Artist Fellowships and all Mass Cultural Council funding when the state budget process is complete and we’ve finalized a spending plan with our governing Council. The exact timeline is hard to predict, but the process is likely to extend into the Fall. In the meantime, you may want to sign up for our Artist News e-newsletter. Once we have more news about the 2021 Artist Fellowships, we’ll share it in Artist News.
