Fellows Notes is a monthly listing of the latest news from awardees in our Artist Fellowships Program.
Rosanna Alfaro (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’11), William Donnelly (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’05), Patrick Gabridge (Dramatic Writing Finalist ’17, ’15), John Kuntz (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’15), Greg Lam (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’19), John Minigan (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’19), Nina Louise Morrison (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’17), and Cassie Seinuk (Dramatic Writing Finalist ’17) are among the playwrights with plays accepted in the Boston Theater Marathon XXII (4/19).
Hannah Barrett (Painting Fellow ’04) and Laurel Sparks (Painting Fellow ’04) have work in Love Match, an exhibition of work by artist pairs who are life partners, at Drive-By Projects in Watertown (3/7-4/25, opening reception 3/7, 4-6 PM).
Patrick Gabridge (Dramatic Writing Finalist ’17, ’15) and Cassie Seinuk (Dramatic Writing Finalist ’17) join co-panelists Kevin Cirone and Greg Hovanesian for a free, 90-minute panel discussion on producing your own work, as a playwright, hosted by the Dramatist Guild of America, at Lyric Stage Company of Boston (3/17, 7-8:30 PM).
Simone John (Poetry Fellow ’20), Mattia Maurée (Music Composition Finalist ’19), and Tara Sellios (Photography Fellow ’19, ’11) are among the Boston-based artists recently selected for the Assets for Artists Capacity-Building Program.
Marky Kauffmann (Photography Fellow ’17) curated and has work in the exhibition Outspoken: Seven Women Photographers at the Chester Gallery at New England College in Henniker, NH (3/25-4/17), in honor of Women’s History Month and the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. The exhibition also includes photography by Rania Matar (Photography Fellow ’11, ’07).
Jane Marsching (Photography Fellow ’99), Matthew Mazzotta (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’19, ’11), and Evelyn Rydz (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’10) are all exhibiting in Local Ecologies at UMass Lowell University Gallery (thru 3/6).

Kati Agócs (Music Composition Fellow ’15) is Artist of the Month from Theodore Front Music Literature.
Elizabeth Alexander (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’11) exhibits as a finalist for the 2019 Burke Prize at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City (thru 4/12); she join artist Patty Carroll for the show Domestic Demise art ArtSpace in Raleigh, NC (thru 4/11); she has work in 100 in 2020 at the Salem College Elberson Fine Arts Center in Winston-Salem, NC (thru 4/25); and she will have work in questions + answers: in pursuit of creativity, which includes work by 2020 Penland School instructors, at the Penland School of Craft John & Robyn Horn Gallery in NC (3/24-5/3, opening reception 3/28, 4:30-6:30 PM).
Nina Bellucci (Painting Fellow 18) is in a two-person exhibition with Kathleen Kennedy, called Quick, Quick, Slow, at Musa Collective in the space it shares with Room83Spring in Watertown. The exhibition runs 3/7-4/25, opening reception 3/7, 6-9 PM).
Sari Boren (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Finalist ’14) read from her essay He’s a Rope at the Resistance Mic event at Oberon Theater in Harvard Square in late February. The essay will soon be published in the Sycamore Review.
Prilla Smith Brackett (Painting Finalist ’12) has work in the group exhibition Natural Attraction at Brickbottom Gallery in Somerville (3/5-4/4).
Ria Brodell (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’14) is among the artists in Hagiography or New Saints at Distillery Gallery in South Boston (opening reception 3/6, 7-10 PM).
P. Carl (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’18) was recently featured on Radio Boston discussing his new book Becoming a Man. He has upcoming readings at Labyrinth Books in Princeton, NJ (3/24, 6 PM) and Big Blue Marble Bookstore in Philadelphia, PA (3/29).
Leigh Craven (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Finalist ’15) is among the artists in the national juried exhibition Wild at Gallery 263 in Cambridge (thru 3/14). The show’s juror is Jane Winchell, director of Peabody Essex Museum’s Dotty Brown Art & Nature Center.
Oliver de la Paz (Poetry Fellow ’20) was recently interviewed by Mass Poetry.
Dana Filibert (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’15) is among the artists in the group exhibition RED at Novado Gallery in Jersey City, NJ (thru 3/21).
Basia Goszczynska (Film & Video Fellow ’13) has work in the group exhibition Mother Boat at Pinto International in New York City (3/12-4/30, opening reception 3/12, 6-9 PM). The exhibition explores ocean health and the global impact of human civilization on ecology.
Carrie Gustafson (Crafts Fellow ’11) has work in two exhibitions: New Glass Northeast at the Gallery at Guilford Art Center in Guilford, CT (3/13-4/5, opening reception 3/13, 5-7 PM); and Chroma: A Contemporary Survey of American Glass at The Gallery at Fort Houston in Nashville, TN (4/4-5/16).
Janet Loren Hill (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Finalist ’19) is Artist-in-Residence at the Pratt Munson-Williams-Proctor Gallery at the PrattMWP College of Art & Design in Utica, NY, where she will have an exhibition, Pulled Down Eyelids, Read With Intention (3/6-3/26, opening reception 3/6 406 PM). This May-July 2020, she will be an Artist-in-Residence at the McColl Center for Art + Innovation in Charlotte, NC.
Joo Lee Kang (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow 14) has a solo exhibition, Cultivated, at Gallery NAGA in Boston (3/6-3/28, opening reception 3/6, 6-8 PM).

Zehra Khan has a solo exhibition, Fakeries, at Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago (thru 3/14), where she is the first Artist-in-Residence.
Mary Kocol (Film & Video Fellow ’99) has a solo exhibition, A Welcomed Enigma, at Gallery NAGA in Boston(3/6-3/28, opening reception 3/6, 6-8 PM).
Louise Laplante (Drawing & Printmaking Finalist ’04) has a solo exhibition, Creatures Big and Small, at GR Gallery, Stamford, CT (thru 3/2020).
Erica Licea-Kane (Painting Fellow ’18) has a solo exhibition, Half Spaces, at Kingston Gallery in Boston (3/4-3/29, opening reception 3/6, 5-8 PM, artist-led walk-through 3/7, 2-3 PM).
Adam Mazo‘s (Film & Video Finalist ’17) film with Ben Pender-Cudlip, Dawnland, will have a free online screening, in honor of the International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims, a United Nations observance happening this month. The screening takes place 3/26, 6:30 PM, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.
Caitlin McCarthy (Dramatic Writing Finalist ’11) has been invited to the annual WGFestival screenwriting conference in Hollywood this May. Her screenplay Wonder Drug was among the Top 10 highest scoring female-written screenplays in the 2019 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition. The Worcester Telegram & Gazette featured McCarthy and recent Best Feature Screenplay award from the Lindsey Film Festival.
John Minigan‘s (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’19) play The Queen of Sad Mischance will have a free reading at Next Door Center for the Arts in Winchester (3/9, 7:30 PM). The play was a Gold Prize winner in the 2019 Clauder Competition for New England playwrights, and an earlier draft was an O’Neill finalist in 2018.
Anne Neely (Painting Finalist ’10) is among the five women artists in Skirting the Line: Painting Between Abstraction and Representation at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockland (3/14-6/7, opening reception 3/21, 5-7 PM).
Dean Nimmer (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’00, ’96) has an exhibition of book-inspired collages at Book Moon in Easthampton (opening reception with artist talk 3/6, 6-9 PM).
Lisa Olivieri‘s (Film & Video Finalist ’09) new film project, Recovery City, is on Facebook and Instagram.
Monica Raymond‘s (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’13) monologue Ernesto will be performed by Jessica Carmona as part of Border Crossers: A Festival of Art to Celebrate Immigrant Lives at Goddard Riverside in New York City (3/14, 7:30 PM).
Matt Rich (Painting Fellow ’10) has a solo exhibition, P & Ting, at LaMontagne Gallery in Boston (thru 3/17, opening reception 3/6, 6-8 PM).
Susan Rivo‘s (Film & Video Finalist ’11) film Left on Pearl screens this month at libraries in Wakefield (3/3, 7 PM), Dedham (3/4, 6 PM), Wayland (3/11, 7 PM), Belmont (3/12, 7 PM) and Gloucester (3/14, 2 PM), as well as California State University in Fresno, CA (3/13, 5:30 PM), the San Francisco Public Library (3/18, 5:30 PM), and The New Parkway Theater in Oakland (3/24, 7 PM).
Anna VQ Ross (Poetry Fellow ’18) was in conversation with poet Frances Donovan on the Mass Poetry web site.
Jo Ann Rothschild (Painting Fellow ’98) joins Jeffrey Hull for the dual exhibition Parallel Tracks at Kent State University in OH (3/4-4/3, reception and gallery talk 3/13, 1:30-3 PM).
Evelyn Rydz (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’10) has work in two group exhibitions, Local Ecologies at UMass Lowell University Gallery (thru 3/6) and Awaken: Conjuring Our Tomorrow (featuring Latina artists exploring climate justice in their practice) at the Salem State University Winfisky Gallery (thru 3/13). She contributed a selection of stories to the collection, How can we practice radical hospitality?.
Natalie Shapero (Poetry Finalist ’18) was the February Artist of the Month from the Somerville Arts Council.
Karen Skolfield (Poetry Fellow ’14) participated in LitFest 2020 at Amherst College in the Poets of Amherst: A Conversation event (2/29). She will participate in a reading and open mic at the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst (3/5, 6-8 PM).
Jacob Strautmann (Poetry Fellow ’18) will have a book launch for his new poetry collection The Land of the Dead is Open for Business at the Blacksmith House Poetry Series in Cambridge (3/2, 8 PM). Later this month, he joins poet Matthew Lippman for a reading at Brookline Booksmith (3/13, 7 PM).
Yu-Wen Wu (Painting Fellow ’04) collaborated with Harriet Bart to create the installation Leavings/Belongings. The installation, which was created in partnership with New Mexico-based immigrants and refugees, is part of the exhibition Displaced at SITE Santa Fe (3/21-9-6). The artist discusses the work in a recent artists’ conversation on ArtSake.

This failing makes for the ghettoization of the majority of artists….——what is the point?
