Fellows Notes is a monthly listing of the latest news from awardees in our Artist Fellowships Program.
Judith Black (Photography Finalist ’99), Marky Kauffmann (Photography Fellow ’17), Rania Matar (Photography Fellow ’11, ’07), Laura McPhee (Photography Fellow ’95), Toni Pepe (Photography Finalist ’11), and Sage Sohier (Photography Finalist ’05, Fellow ’79) are all exhibiting in Presence of Being, an exhibition of portraiture at Laconia Gallery in Boston (thru 7/13).
At the recent 31st Annual Lambda Literary Awards ceremony, Alexander Chee (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’10) received the prestigious Trustee Award for Excellence in Literature, Duy Doan (Poetry Finalist ’10) received an award for Bisexual Poetry for his collection We Play a Game. Ria Brodell (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’14) and Joy Ladin (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Finalist ’12) were among the Lambda Literary Award finalists.
Kristen Emack (Photography Fellow ’19), Mary Lewey (Film & Video Finalist ’19), and Ann Strassman (Painting Finalist ’16) are all exhibiting in the 2019 National Prize Show from the Cambridge Art Association. The show, co-curated by Steve Locke (Photography Finalist ’17, Painting Finalist ’14), awarded Ann Strassman First Prize and Kristen Emack Second Prize.
Dana Filibert (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’15) has art for sale and Wendy Jehlen‘s (Choreography Fellow ’12) ANIKAYA Dance will perform at the BCA Ball and the Boston Center for the Arts Cyclorama (6/1, 7 PM).
Sean Greene (Painting Fellow ’14), Dean Nimmer (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’00), and Jen Simms (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Finalist ’05) are among the artists in nine by nine at PULP Holyoke (6/15-7/28).
Michael Joseph (Photography Fellow ’15), Marky Kauffmann (Photography Fellow ’17), Stefanie Klavens (Photography Finalist ’17, ’15), and Sarah Malakoff (Photography Fellow ’11) are among the photographers with work on display in THE FENCE, a photographic public art exhibition in Boston. There will be a walking tour 6/8, 2-4 PM.

Sarah Bliss (Film & Video Finalist ’19, Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’13) screens her film Unless You’re Living It at Edinburgh International Film Festival (6/22 and 6/26) in Edinburgh, Scotland. While in Scotland, she’ll be teaching a daylong workshop in cameraless filmmaking at University of Dundee. The film, which is a portrait of place and power in rural white Ontario, was recently awarded Honorable Mention by jurors at the Montreal Underground Film Festival.
Jodi Colella (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’19) joins Sarah Meyers Brent for the two-person exhibition Inspired by the Sublime at Suffolk University Gallery (6/10-7/8, opening reception 6/13, 5:30 PM). She is also exhibiting in the group show Emergence at the Gallery at Atlantic Wharf (thru 6/28).
Patrick Donnelly (Poetry Fellow ’08) will read from his new poetry collection Little-Known Operas at a number of upcoming events, including The Basement in Northampton (6/4, 7 PM), Forbes Library in Northampton (6/5, 7 PM), Mocha Maya’s Coffee House in Shelburne Falls (6/6, 7 PM), The Silo Series at The Word Barn in Exeter, NH (6/7, 7 PM), McNally Jackson Bookstore Soho in NYC (6/18, 7 PM), and the Gloucester Writers Center (6/26, 7:30 PM).
Tory Fair (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’18) has a solo exhibition, Portable Archive, at Drive-By Projects in Watertown (6/1-8/3, opening reception 6/1, 4-6 PM).
Patrick Gabridge‘s (Dramatic Writing Finalist ’17, ’15) The Nature Plays, a series of five plays site-specific to Mount Auburn Cemetery, will be performed there (5/30-6/9). The plays stem from the playwright’s artist residency at the historic cemetery. Patrick Gabridge’s play None but the Best will have performances by In Good Company at Bemis Hall in Lincoln (6/1-6/2) and Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds in Newton (6/8-6/9).
Brece Honeycutt (Drawing & Printmaking ’18) is exhibiting in the group show Everyday Perfection at Albany International Airport Gallery (thru 9/2). Recently, she exhibited in The Future is in the Making at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Art and Design Gallery in NYC, which she is currently Artist in Residence. This summer, she’ll return to a residency at Naumkeag, working on site one day a week.
Joel Janowitz (Painting Fellow ’16, ’08, ’79, ’75) is in the group exhibition Memory Loves Time (thru 6/9) and a solo exhibition of paintings and prints (6/12-7/17), both at the Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown. His solo exhibition Passages and Waterways: Joel Janowitz Work on Paper exhibits at Gladstone Gallery in Manchester-by-the-Sea (6/11-8/17, opening reception 6/22, 4-6 PM).
Marjorie Kaye (Painting Finalist ’18) exhibits in Constellations, a two-person show with George Shaw, at Atlantic Works Gallery (6/7-6/29, opening reception 6/8, 6-9 PM, Third Thursday Celebration/Artist Talk 6/20, 6-9 PM).
Ann S. Kim‘s (Film & Video Fellow ’13) film with Priya Desai, Lovesick, has a free screening at Kendall Square Cinema in Cambridge, presented by GlobeDocs (6/19, 7 PM).
Greg Lam (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’19) will have a staged reading of his play The Last Ship to Proxima Centauri at Pao Arts Center, presented by Company One PlayLab (6/1, 7 PM).
Mira T. Lee (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’12) joins another novelist, Angie Kim, for the reading event Family Dramas: Telling All Sides at Cambridge Public Library Main Branch (6/27, 6:30 PM).
Scott Listfield (Painting Finalist ’10) has a solo exhibition, Divide: An Astronaut Story, at StolenSpace in London (6/7-7/7, opening reception 6/6, 6-9 PM).
Melinda Lopez (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’19, ’03) received an Elliot Norton Prize for Sustained Excellence at the 37th Annual Elliot Norton Awards. Her play Yerma, which she adapted and translated from the play by Federico García Lorca, is presented this month by Huntington Theatre Company at the Boston Center for the Arts Calderwood Pavilion (5/31-6/30).
Adam Mazo‘s (Film & Video Finalist ’17) Dawnland, his film with Ben Pender-Cudlip, has screenings this month including its New York City premiere at the Peoples Film Festival (6/1), as well as screenings in Maine (6/6 and 6/14)) and in Cambridge (6/13).
Mary Bucci McCoy (Painting Fellow ’12) has a solo exhibition, Vis-à-vis, at Gray Contemporary in Houston (thru 6/22).
Kat O’Connor (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’18) has a solo exhibition, This Fluid Report of Motion, at ArtsWorcester‘s East Gallery (opening reception 6/20, 6-9 PM; artist talk 6/25, noon).
Daniela Petrova (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’12) will publish her debut novel Her Daughter’s Mother (6/18).
Susan Rivo‘s (Film & Video Finalist ’11) film Left on Pearl screens in the Female Filmmakers Festival in Berlin as the opening night feature (6/13).
Cassie Seinuk (Dramatic Writing Finalist ’17) has a reading of her play Meet Me in the Bathroom at Central Square Theater (6/24, 7 PM).
Natalie Shapero (Poetry Finalist ’18) reads poetry in the Unearthed Song & Poetry Series at Homestead Bakery and Café in Dorchester (6/7, 7:30 PM).
