Of Note: The Creative NEXT Visual Arts/Crafts meeting for visual and craft artists with Helena Fruscio, the Creative Economy Industry Director for Massachusetts, will occur on Wednesday, August 22nd from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Mass College of Art and Design, 621 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA. The event is free but pre-registration required. Learn more.

Short Plays and Musicals The historic Players Theatre, located in Greenwich Village, is now accepting entries for their Short Play and Musical Festival. This year’s theme is horror. Learn more.
Deadline: August 27, 2012

Professional Development Montserrat College of Art in collaboration with the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston are currently accepting applications for The Artist’s Professional Toolbox (APT) Certificate; a one-year professional development certificate program on Montserrat’s Beverly campus during the 2012-13 academic year. Learn more.
Deadline Extended: September 4, 2012.

Artists/Artisans Apply to be a vendor at the 2012 Boston Bazaar Bizarre, which offers “handmade goodness to the people of Boston (and beyond).” Artists and artisans can apply for a table or booth (either individually or sharing the space) at the event, which takes place at the Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts on Sunday, December 16, 2012. There is a $15 fee to apply; potential vendors are encouraged to send images that strongly represent your work, as well as any pertinent links. Learn more.

Filmmakers The filmmaker Lars von Trier (yes, he of the shaking hand-held camera who drove Bjork to her mental edge) is currently accepting entries for a crowd surfed film. Artists are asked to create a 5 minute film reinterpreting 6 famous art pieces. Learn more.

African American Visual Artists The Riverside Gallery in Cambridge is seeking work by New England African American artists for the juried show African American Artists – Passion for a Lifetime. There is no fee to apply ($10 administrative fee for accepted artists) with ready-to-hang 2-D art. The exhibition will run mid-September to mid-November, 2012. Jurors are Susan Denker, Marlon Forrester, and Sally Lindover. Email the gallery for an application form and more information.

Artist Fellowships Applications are now being accepted for Guggenheim Fellowships. Grants are to individuals only (but are not available to students) and have been averaging $43,200 for U.S./Canadian fellowships – amounts are adjusted to the needs of the fellows, considering their resources and the purpose and scope of their plans. Call to Artists The Arts Center Sarasota is now accepting entries for their upcoming exhibition It’s Political! This exhibition asks artists to come up with a politically themed piece, special for this election season. Artists are invited to submit up to three (3) two- and three-dimensional works in a variety of media, including (but not limited to) painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and digital art.
