Artist Opportunities Unplugged

Unearthed from the public domain is archival footage showing, with out a doubt, a young Jack White with his first band attempting to play Seven Nation Army.

Call for Art Entries are now being accepted for the 4th annual Middlesex Fells Art Month for the month of September, 2014, at the Beebe Estates gallery, 235 West Foster, Melrose, Massachussetts. Opening reception is September 5 from 7-9 pm. Gallery hours are Saturdays from 11-3. This year’s theme is Nature. They are seeking art that depicts nature under threat, nature being preserved and nature being celebrated. The size limit for hanging art is 20 x 20. Submit up to 3 samples. No entry fee. Short Plays Gallery 263 in Cambridge is currently calling for original short plays and adaptations on the theme “behind the scenes of a famous work of art.” You may select any famous painting or well-known artwork and write about what lead up to that moment, what happened after, or write about something directly in the middle. Selected plays will be staged during the weekend of September 5-7, 2014 at Gallery 263. Learn more.

One Minute Films Gallery 263 in Cambridge is currently calling for one-minute films on the theme of “summertime.” Films can be narrative, abstract, animated, shot with your smartphone, or with professional gear. All films will be screened at the gallery on August 9. All submissions welcome. Learn more.

Call for Boston Area Artists In conjunction with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), the Somerville, Medford and Cambridge Arts Councils will commission multiple artists to design an integrated art program for the Green Line Extension stations. Learn more.

NEFA Info Session on Wednesday, August 20, 10AM-12PM. NEFA staff will give an overview of its grants and programs for both artists and organizations. A highlight will be a demonstration of NEFA’s newest tool, CreativeGround, New England’s regional directory that spotlights cultural nonprofits, creative businesses and professional artists, and connects them with each other and those who are invested in the New England creative economy. RSVP by August 18, 2014.

Poetry and Short Stories The Black Lawrence Press awards The St. Lawrence Book Award for an unpublished first collection of poems or short stories. The St. Lawrence Book Award is open to any writer who has not yet published a full-length collection of short stories or poems. The winner of this contest will receive book publication, a $1,000 cash award, and 10 copies of the book. Learn more.

Call for Painting Artists New American Paintings, a juried exhibition in print format, is currently accepting applications for their 2014 Northeast Competition. This year’s curator is Michelle Grabner, Artist, Educator, and Co-Curator, 2014 Whitney Biennial. Artists must submit 4 images for consideration. Learn more.

Call for Art The Community Arts Center of Danville, KY, hosts Horizon: Contemporary Landscape, a juried exhibition designed to test the limits of what we think of when we hear the word “landscape,” blurring the lines between portrayals of traditional and experimental landscapes. A first, second and third prize are also given to the artists whose works display artistic excellence and strength of execution. Learn more.

Photography The CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography is open to North American citizens of any age who have yet to publish a book-length work. The prize’s focus is on creating an opportunity for photographers who are engaged in the creation of a continued, active, and vital body of work to publish a first book. Learn more.

Works on Paper South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, MA, invites entries of original work that offer distinctive, imaginative imagery using paper. Show dates October 24 – December 21, 2014. Boston-area Visual Artists Artadia is back in Boston! Artadia is now accepting applications for the 2014 Boston Artadia Award from all visual artists living and working throughout the metro Boston area. Individual artists and collaboratives working in all media and at any stage in their career are strongly encouraged to apply. Awardees will be selected through a two-tiered jury process that employs a panel of prominent curators and established artists in the fall of 2014. Learn more.
