Seeking Nominations On February 14, 2024 a permanent bust of African American orator, writer, abolitionist, politician, and freedom fighter, Frederick Douglass, took its place in the Massachusetts State Senate chamber. This leaves one empty spot in the Chamber and to increase representation throughout the State House, Senate President Karen Spilka is asking for residents to submit names of an influential woman with ties to Massachusetts who has made historic and defining contributions to the Commonwealth and the country. Of Note for New Bedford Artists How Creatives Can Be Seen and Found in a Data-Driven World is an online event on May 14, 2024, 2 PM EDY. As a follow up to the report being released on May 7th, the Composition of the New Bedford Creative Economy, planning consultant Laurie Zapalac will review the how and why of industry classification codes and occupancy codes, including their relationship to categories of creative activity, and the importance of using them effectively in any type of registry process. She will also offer best practices for developing your free, user-generated and maintained profiles in the New Bedford Creative Directory and Creative Ground, the statewide creative directory managed by the New England Foundation for the Arts. Associates of the Boston Public Library’s Writer-in-Residence fellowship This program is designed for emerging authors writing for children or young-adults. Early-Career Artist Fellowship The Eliza Moore Fellowship for Artistic Excellence is awarded annually to one outstanding, early-career artist who is developing new works that address plants, gardens, or landscapes in the broad sense. Crafts Grants The Society of Arts + Crafts Jumpstarter program consists of four (4) grants of $3,000 each: two (2) in the summer and two (2) in the winter. Grant for Emerging LGBTQ+ Photographers The Robert Giard Grant for Emerging LGBTQ+ Photographers is currently accepting applications. Queer|Art’s first international grant provides an award of $10,000 for the winner and $1,250 for distinguished finalists, to support the creation of new work by emerging LGBTQ+ photographers. Named in honor of photographer Robert Giard (1939-2002), a portrait, landscape, and figure photographer whose work focused on LGBTQ+ lives and issues, the grant focuses on supporting emerging LGBTQ+ photographers whose projects address issues of sexuality, gender, or LGBTQ+ identity. Ceramics Artist in Residence The Umbrella Arts Center, in Concord MA, seeks applicants for the Ceramics Artist Residency program. Active ceramic artists and educators looking to join to a fully equipped ceramics program with a large and vibrant community are encouraged to apply. Residency Dates: September 15, 2024 – August 15, 2025. The selected resident artist will be an active part of The Umbrella’s creative community of more than 50 artists, and will have opportunities to collaborate across the organization.
