Register to Vote The 2018 midterm elections are coming up soon. They will take place on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. The deadline to register to vote in Massachusetts is Wednesday, October 17, 2018. Local Cultural Council Grants Artists can apply for these grants! The average grants tend to be modest ($500-$750) and are reimbursement-based, meaning the applicant expends their own money, and if approved for a grant, then submits paperwork for reimbursement. Learn more.

Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program The Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program fosters the sharing of traditional (folk) artistic skills through the apprenticeship learning model of regular, intensive, one-on-one teaching by a master artist to a student/apprentice. The program pairs master artists from RI, MA, or CT with apprentices from one of the other states, as a way to knit together members of the same community or group across state lines. Learn more.

Somerville Poet Laureate The Somerville Arts Council is looking for Somerville’s third Poet Laureate. The Poet Laureate helps to spread poetry throughout Somerville and receives a $2,000 per year honorarium for their work. The Poet Laureate serves a two-year term beginning in January 2019. Call to Artists Entries are now being considered for an exhibition at b.j.spoke gallery, Huntington, NY. The exhibition of selected works will be presented in March 2019 at the b.j. spoke gallery. All fine arts media are acceptable: watercolor, drawing, pastel, painting,sculpture, mixed media, installation art, photography, video, digital art, etchings, monotype, monoprint, silk screen, lithography, collagraph, fiber art, etc. No crafts. Writing Fellowships in Provincetown The Fine Arts Work Center offers a unique residency for writers and visual artists in the crucial early stages of their careers. Located in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the Work Center provides seven-month Fellowships to twenty Fellows each year in the form of living/work space and a modest monthly stipend. Residencies run from October 1 through April 30. Fellows have the opportunity to pursue their work independently in a diverse and supportive community of peers. Short Stories Writers are invited to create and submit a short story consisting of 50 paragraphs. The contest provides the 1st and 25th paragraphs, and the short story writer crafts the rest. First prize is $3000, 2nd prize is $2000, and 3rd prize is $1000 with the winning short stories published in a short story anthology, as well as an invitation to give a public reading at Inkberry Books in Niwot, CO. The twenty-four (24) Finalists will also have their short stories included in this anthology. Learn more.

Artist Grants Applications are being accepted for the Adolph & Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grants. Individual Support grants available to painters, printmakers and sculptors with a minimum of 20 years in a mature phase; grant amounts are determined each year. Last year this program awarded 12 grants of $25,000 each. A separate grant program, for emergencies, assists mature painters, printmakers and sculptors suffering from a recent, unforeseen catastrophic event (fire, flood, medical emergency), who have a minimum of ten years in a mature phase; grant amounts range up to $15,000 depending on the need and circumstances of the individual applicant.
