New: MITx Arts Entrepreneurship Course Starts March 25 Mass Cultural Council is excited to spotlight a new Arts Entrepreneurship course available on MITx, offering artists and creatives a professional development opportunity to help them build financially sustainable careers while staying true to their creative vision. This course was funded, in part, through a $60,000 grant to MIT Sloan School of Management, one of the world’s top-ranked business schools, from Mass Cultural Council. MITx is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) online learning initiative, delivering courses created by MIT faculty to learners around the world through digital platforms. This free course features 12 modules and practical exercises designed to equip artists with business skills, and to advance their ability to strategically and sustainably generate revenue through their creative work. Those wishing to learn more are encouraged to register for a March 20 info session hosted by the Mass Cultural Council, featuring the course instructors. Call to Artists Newburyport Art Association (NAA) invites sculptors to submit to the 11th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Garden Exhibition. Free Artist Workshop Airtight Garage, a new contemporary art space and incubator is hosting its first free, virtual workshop series. Writing For Artists is a practical writing course meeting monthly in late March, April, and May to go over three common assignments for artists: the artist statement, the exhibition proposal, and the grant application through writing exercises and feedback. For its inaugural exhibition, Airtight Garage is also calling for work from contemporary artists across Massachusetts who must be able to attend the opening in Salem, MA. Artwork must depict anatomically accurate North Atlantic right whale physical characteristics. Boston Area Artists The Boston Mayor’s Office of Arts & Culture (MOAC) provides grants to support programs and events at City Hall Plaza. With the City Hall Plaza Engagement Grant, MOAC aims to highlight culturally responsive programming that uplifts Boston’s diverse communities while repositioning City Hall Plaza as a site for creative growth, capacity-building, and civic belonging. This fund will support individuals, nonprofit organizations, collectives or fiscally sponsored groups to implement creative activations on Boston City Hall Plaza, with a priority for projects that center communities who have been impacted by long-standing systemic inequities. Call for Art Arts in Bloom is a competitive juried annual show open to all artists. Marcia R. Wise will choose the artwork to be exhibited and select six outstanding works for awards. The six winning artists will receive cash prizes totaling over $1,000. The Hopkinton Garden Club will be choosing several pieces to inspire floral arrangements that will be on display in the gallery. However, despite the contributions of immigrants to the cultural, financial, scientific, and artistic makeup of the United States, there is no clear home for new immigrant writings in the United States. To remedy this, Black Lawrence Press proudly publishes the Black Lawrence Immigrant Writing Series, an innovative program designed to provide a home for new immigrant writers in the United States and bridge a gap in the American literary community.
