GennaRose Nethercott (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’18) knew she had to pursue writing as a career when, during college, taking breaks from writing caused her “bouts of ennui.”
“I thought, if this is how it’s going to be, then I’ve got to go all in. I’m going to do this for real.”
Since then, she’s written everything from stories to poems to song lyrics to experimental hybrid forms, and she’s collaborated with visual artists, puppeteers, and musicians. Her work (no matter the genre) explores the way folklore and the fantastical can reveal universal, human truths.
In this audio clip, Nethercott reads a section from her short story 50 Beasts to Break Your Heart. She also discusses the various “boxes” in which she houses her storytelling, and what’s coming next.

GennaRose Nethercott is a 2018 recipient of the Mass Cultural Council Fellowship in Fiction/Creative Nonfiction and the author of, most recently, Lianna Fled the Cranberry Bog: A Story in Cootie Catchers (Ninepin Press 2019) and The Lumberjack’s Dove (Ecco/HarperCollins, 2018), selected by Louise Glück as a winner of the National Poetry Series. Her work has appeared in Electric Literature, BOMB Magazine, The Massachusetts Review, and elsewhere, and she has been a writer-in-residence at the Vermont Studio Center, Art Farm Nebraska, and the Shakespeare & Company bookstore in Paris.
