November, upon us like a helping of heavily syrupped sweet potatoes, brings with it this bounty of news from our past Fellows/Finalists…
Congratulations to Sachiko Akiyama (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’05), Angela Cunningham (Crafts Finalist ’11, ’09), David Valdes Greenwood (Playwriting Finalist ’03), Wendy Jehlen (Choreography Finalist ’04), and Robert Todd (Film & Video Finalist ’09, ’05), who, along with Chandra Dieppa Ortiz, received 2011 Brother Thomas Fellowships. The $15,000 awards support contemporary artists through the sale of porcelain ceramics by Brother Thomas Bezanson, a Benedictine monk who wanted his world-renowned art to benefit working artists.
Elizabeth Alexander (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’11) and Samantha Fields (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’11) join Kirsten Reynolds for Home Sweet Home at the Montserrat Gallery in Beverly, Nov. 4-Jan 21, with an opening reception Thursday, Nov. 3, 5-8 PM. The site-specific installations explore the concept of “home,” within an architectural and feminist context. Elizabeth Alexander will have an artist talk on Thursday, November 3, 11:30 AM, in Room 201. She’ll also participate in the Contemporary Cocktail Form, Space and the Female Body Panel discussion on Friday, November 11, 7-9 PM in the Student Lounge.
Liza Bingham (Painting Finalist ’10) and Nona Hershey (Drawing Fellow ’04) are included in All Flavors, a group show at Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown, MA. The show runs through January 2, 2012.
Christy Georg (Sculpture/Installation Finalist ’11) and Colleen Kiely (Painting Fellow ’98) both have work in the 22nd Drawing show Residue, at the Boston Center for the Arts Mills Gallery (through Nov 27, 2011).
Steve Almond‘s (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’08) new story collection, God Bless America, has been published. This month, Steve has two local readings with William Giraldi: at Newtonville Books on Tues., Nov. 1, 7 PM, and at Porter Square Books on Mon, Nov. 28, 7 PM. He’ll also read at Nichols College in Dudley, MA on Tues., Nov. 29. Check the full reading schedule.
Claire Andrade-Watkins‘s (Film & Video Fellow ’09) short documentary Hi, Neighbor (2011, 13 min) premiered at the Cabo Verde International Film Festival. The film, which is a prequel to Claire’s trilogy of films about the Cape Verdean community in the Fox Point neighborhood of Providence, RI, marks the first time that the artist has premiered a work about Cape Verdeans, by Cape Verdeans, at a Cape Verdean film festival.
Claire Beckett (Photography Fellow ’07) has a solo show, Simulating Iraq, as part of the MATRIX program of contemporary art exhibitions at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, CT. The show runs November 3, 2011-March 4, 2012, with an opening reception Thursday, November 4, 2011, 5-8 PM and an artist talk at 6 PM. Also, photographs from Claire’s In Training series are featured in two shows currently running: The Workers at MASS MoCA in North Adams, through March 2012, and HomeFrontLine: Reflections on Ten Years of War Since 9/11 at Silver Eye Center for Photography through December 10, 2011. Recently, Claire’s work was included in The Truth is Not in the Mirror at Illinois State University Galleries.
Congratulations to Lucien Castaing-Taylor (Film & Video Fellow ’11, with Ilisa Barbash) who won a Cinereach film grant for his next project, Leviathan.
Mark Cooper (Crafts Fellow ’11) has a solo show, More Is More, at Samson Projects in Boston. The site-responsive work is a culmination of nearly four decades of explorations in ceramics, paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and collaborative projects. The show runs October 21-December 10, 2011, with an artist’s reception Friday, November 4, 5-8 PM.
Work by Vico Fabbris (Painting Fellow ’06, Drawing Fellow ’00) is featured in issue #8 – the last issue – of Wild Apples journal.
Congratulations to Eric Gottesman (Photography Fellow ’09), selected for inclusion in the 2012 deCordova Biennial at the deCordova Sculpture Park & Museum.
Laura Harrington (Playwriting Fellow ’05, ’97) has been commissioned by Playwrights Horizons in New York City to adapt her new novel Alice Bliss as a theatrical musical (interestingly, the novel was inspired by another musical, Laura’s Alice Unwrapped). Laura will collaborate with composer Jenny Giering and lyricist Adam Gwon. Incidentally, the novel was chosen to be part of Barnes & Noble’s Discover Great New Writers program. Alice Bliss recently got a favorable mention in The London Sunday Times.
Eric Hofbauer (Music Composition Fellow ’09) will perform in two sets on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at Johnny D’s in Somerville. The first set will feature Eric’s newest collaboration, a collective quartet with Pandelis Karayorgis, Jacob William, and Luther Gray. The second set will feature Eric’s working quartet (this evening, a sextet) The Infrared Band. Find more information on the event’s Facebook page, or at Johnny D’s.
Sharon Howell‘s (Poetry Fellow ’10) new poetry book Girl in Everytime (Pressed Wafer Press, 2011) has been published, available at Small Press Distribution and Amazon. Sharon will read with fellow Pressed Wafer poet Linda Norton at Adams House at Harvard, Lower Common Room, on November 3, 2011, 7 PM.
Laurie Kaplowitz (Painting Finalist ’08) is in a dual exhibition with Stacy Latt Savage, Embodied, at the Brandeis University Women’s Studies Research Center, through December 20, 2011. The artists will present an Artists’ Slide Talk on Thursday, November 3, 2011, at 6:30 PM, and will join artists Susan Lichtman and Tory Fair (Sculpture/Installation Finalist ’11) and moderator Gannit Ankori for a panel discussion, “The Female Body in Contemporary Art” on Thursday, November 17, 2011, 2 PM.
Randall MacLowry (Film & Video Fellow ’07, with Tracy Heather Strain) produced and directed “The Illusion of Time,” an episode of the NOVA show The Fabric of the Cosmos. The episode premieres November 9, 2011.

Christian McEwen (Playwriting Fellow ’11) recently published a new book, World Enough & Time: On Creativity and Slowing Down (Bauhan Publishing, 2011, read an excerpt). This month, Christian has readings on November 3, 6:30 PM, with Mark Statman at the Teachers & Writers Collaborative in New York, NY; November 10, 6 PM, at Boswell’s Books in Shelburne Falls; November 13, 4 PM, at Grace Church in Amherst (short reading and presentation); November 17, 7 PM, at Sky Lake Lodge in Rosendale, NY.
Nathalie Miebach (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’09) was a 2011 TEDGlobal Fellow, and her TED Talk is online. She’ll speak in person on November 10, 4-5 PM (3:30 PM reception), at the Boston University Center for Space Physics in Room 502 of 725 Commonwealth Ave. The talk is called “Weaving Science Into Sound and Touch.”
Lisa Olstein (Poetry Fellow ’06) has two poetry readings this month: on Monday, November 7, 8 PM, she joins Carol Moldow for a reading at the Blacksmith House in Cambridge. Then, on Sunday, November 20, 3 PM, she reads at the Concord Free Public Library, Main Branch, in Concord.
Marlo Poras (Film & Video Fellow ’05) received a Cinereach grant for her film-in-progress, The Mosuo Sisters.
Daniel Ranalli (Drawing Fellow ’10) is included in a major fall exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts/Boston, Dance/Draw, curated by Helen Molesworth. The exhibition, which runs through January 16, 2012, includes works from Daniel’s Snail Drawing series (images from that series won the artist the Mass Cultural Council fellowship). Daniel is also participating in the ICA’s 75 Artists for the 75th exhibition.
Monica Raymond (Playwriting Finalist ’07, Poetry Finalist ’08) gave a talk on Saturday, September 24 at HunterCCSTedEx conference called “On Living a Carbon Neutral Life.” Also, qarrtsiluni.com recently published her poem The Capture.
Janet Rickus (Painting Fellow ’06) has a solo show of new paintings at Gallery Henoch in New York City, November 17-December 10, 2011, opening reception November 17, 6-8 M.
Jo Ann Rothschild (Painting Fellow ’98) was recently welcomed to The Art Connection’s Board of Directors and Expansion Committee.
Jo Sandman (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’84) is among the artists featured in Color Study at the Asheville Art Museum in Asheville, NC, through November 6, 2011. Color Study provides a lively discourse between contemporary and historical works and tackles a variety of critical issues surrounding color. The works in this exhibition use color as their primary means of expression.
Elizabeth Whyte Schulze (Crafts Fellow ’09) is among the nationally-known artists exhibiting in Gathered, through November 29 at Museo in Langley, WA. The show, which features works using a variety of fibers and differing artistic approaches, will have an opening reception Saturday, November 5, 2011, 5-7 PM.
Tara Sellios (Photography Fellow ’11) has a solo show called Lessons of Impermanence at The New England School of Art & Design, running November 10, 2011-January 11, 2012. The opening for the show is Thursday, November 10. Read an interview with Tara.
Leslie Sills (Crafts Fellow ’95) has work in The Tea Pot Redefined 2011 at Mobilia Gallery in Cambridge, running through November 25, with an opening reception Thursday, November 3, 6-8 PM.
Jeff Daniel Silva‘s (Film & Video Finalist ’09) film Ivan & Ivana was selected for the Viennale in Vienna, Austria. It also screens at the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) on November 11 and 13.
As mentioned above, Robert Todd (Film & Video Finalist ’09, ’05) won a 2011 Brother Thomas Fellowship. This month, Robert’s new film Master Plan will premiere at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge on November 1, 2011, 7:30 PM. Master Plan explores a variety of residential spaces and the people – and cultural connotations – of different types of housing. The filmmaker will host a Q&A following the film and discussion on urban planning, and how incarceration fits into “neighborhood development.” Read an interview with Robert on the LEF Foundation blog.
Debra Weisberg (Drawing Fellow ’08) has a solo show at Gallery Kayafas in Boston, Dystopian Dreaming: Constructed/Glow Drawings by Debra Weisberg, running through November 26, 2011. The gallery will be open First Friday, November 4 until 8 PM.
