News and Notes from MCC Artist Fellows
We compile a monthly list of presentations, honors, publications, and events featuring past and present MCC Artist Fellows & Finalists. As you’ll see, the news is good – not just about these award-winning artists, but also about the breadth and vitality of contemporary arts throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.
Ken Beck’s (Painting Finalist ’06) solo exhibition Rock ‘n Tree runs at Gallery NAGA in Boston. Known for painting stark, almost iconic objects (jars, fence posts, a fire hydrant), here Ken breaks new ground with a collection of fascinating landscapes. The show runs September 227. Opening reception Friday, September 5, 68 PM; artist talk “Don’t Ask Me, I’m Just the Artist” on Saturday, September 13, 2 PM.
Nell Breyer (Choreography Fellow ’06) is collaborating with Alissa Cardone, Lorraine Chapman, and Bronwen MacArthur (Choreography Finalists ’08) to create A Media/Movement Collaboration, performed at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City on September 20, 5 PM. The collaboration grew out of the Summer Stages Dance/ Baryshnikov Arts Center Residency Project of the Summer Stages Dance at Concord Academy.
Ariel Gonzalez Cohen and Kellie Ann Lynch (Choreography Fellows ’08) aka slippery fish dance present The 24 Hour Dance at the Northampton Center for the Arts in Northampton MA. Performances on both nights feature new and revisited work by slipperyfish, with special guest choreographer and performer Meredith Lyons. The highlight will be The 24 Hour Dance, which will be developed through audience participation on the first night and premiered on night two. The performances take place Saturday, September 13 at 8 PM and Sunday, September 14 at 7:00 PM.
Richard Cornell’s (Music Composition Fellow ’07) Tracer, a collaboration with visual artist Deborah Cornell, will be performed by Boston Musica Viva at the Ditson Festival of Contemporary Music, taking place at the ICA Sept 18-21.
Rebecca Kaiser Gibson’s (Poetry Fellow ’08) poem “Inside the Church” (which you can read here) has been published in the anthology Cadence of Hooves, A Celebration of Horses (Yarroway Mountain Press), edited by Suzan Jantz.
Sherrill Hunnibell (Drawing Fellow ’04) has a solo exhibition of mixed media paintings and altered books at Turtle Gallery in Deer Isle, Maine. The exhibition runs through October 18.
Fourteen drawings from Colleen Kiely’s (Painting Fellow ’98) On the Road series are including in the The Fine Art of Drawing Invitational at the Museum of Fine Arts, Florida State University at Tallahassee. The exhibition runs August 25-September 28.
Sculptural and 2-D work by Julie Levesque (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’05) shows at the Rice/Pollak Gallery in Provincetown in a solo exhibition running through Sept 14. Julie’s work infuses stark, monochromatic objects with striking narrative life.
Recent drawings by Alexis Mahon (Drawing Finalist ’08) are on exhibit at the Steven Zevitas Gallery in Boston. The show, which also features art by Jacob El Hanani, runs September 4-October 11, with an artist reception Friday, September 5, 5:30 PM.
Rania Matar (Photography Fellow ’07) is part of the exhibit Contrapuntal Lines: Rania Matar and Buthina Abu Milhem at Koppelman Gallery, Aidekman Arts Center, Tufts University in Somerville, from September 11-December 21, 2008. Opening reception Thursday, September 18, 5:308:30 pm.
Stephen Mishol’s (Painting Fellow ’08) work is included in the Contemporary American Realism: 2008 Biennial at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, in Indiana. The exhibit runs September 13 – November 2, 2008.
Barbara Moody (Drawing Finalist ’04) is part of “Take Out,” the annual members show at Kingston Gallery in Boston, September 2-27.
David Moore (Painting Fellow ’08) exhibits at the Kidder Smith Gallery in Boston, September 3-27. Opening reception, September 5, from 6-8 PM.
Mary O’Malley (Drawing Fellow ’06) is among the artists exhibiting in Drawn to Detail at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, August 30, 2008January 4, 2009. Opening reception September 4, 7-9 PM. Mary will present at the family-friendly Eye Wonder program on October 16 and at an Artist Talk on December 6.
Rachel Perry Welty (Drawing Fellow ’04) shows in Drawn to Detail (Aug. 30-Jan. 4) at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln. She has an Artist Talk on September 20. Elsewhere in the country, shes showing as part of the Transformed exhibition at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, through September 28. Also, her collaboration with Sarah Hollis Perry runs September 16 through October 10 at the Louisiana Tech University School of Art, with an opening performance on Tuesday, September 16.
Scott Wheeler (Music Composition Fellow ’05) is among the performers participating in National Anthem, a classical music concert to benefit Barack Obama, on Friday, September 12, 8 PM, at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. Later in September, Scott will conduct Dinosaur Annex for the Boston premiere of his piece The Gold Standard, as part of the Ditson Festival of Contemporary Music at the ICA, Sept 18-21.
Nina Wishnok (Drawing Fellow ’06) exhibits as part of Field Report, a members’ exhibition of the Boston Printmakers at Brickbottom Gallery in Somerville, through October 18.
