Of Note: World Oceans Day 2019 is this Saturday, June 8th! The New England Aquarium’s activities celebrating World Oceans Day 2019 are free, open to the public, and do not require Aquarium admission! This year’s Aquarium’s theme is single-use plastic. The Ocean Protection Advocacy Kids, Inc. on Cape Cod is hosting a screening the documentary film Sonic Sea at the Chatham Orpheum Theatre. Call to Artists ArtsWorcester invites members to register work for the exhibition About Face, a non-juried, open-member exhibition (June 20 – August 3, 2019) exploring the many forms of portraiture. They seek approaches to likeness, expression, mood, or personality, through representations of individuals, pairs, or groups. Works can be two- or three- dimensional, still or moving images, and formal or informal. All media are accepted. Five hundred dollars in prizes will be awarded by Lauren Szumita, Curatorial Assistant of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Worcester Art Museum. Lo-Fi Photography, Toy Camera Photography The Somerville Toy Camera Festival seeks entries for its seventh annual celebration of toy and lo-fi photography. Images of any subject matter, made with a “toy” camera – any low-tech camera with no or very limited exposure control, such as pinhole, Holga, Diana/Diana clones, Brownie, Ansco, disposable cameras – are eligible. The key criteria are plastic lenses and a lack of reliable exposure control. Straight Polaroid-type images, or images made with cell phones, digital cameras, or film cameras with full exposure control (such as the Lomo LC series), will not be considered. Learn more.

Cover Art Contest Arlington Community Education is accepting submissions of artwork for their cover art contest. Winning artists will receive $250 and exposure to an audience of more than 50,000 in exchange for use of their artwork. All mediums are welcome, including watercolor, acrylics, prints, photography, oil, collage, quilting, assemblage, stained glass, etching, handmade paper and mosaic. Call to Artists The Northampton Arts Council invites submissions for their 2019 Visual Arts and Poetry Biennial. Open to artists and poets in Western Massachusetts. Artists are asked to submit two and three-dimensional art in any style, as well as video and performance art to interpret the theme “from seed to fruition” in a literal form or as a work/body of work that has been fully developed and most closely represent the artist’s personal artistic vision. Jurors include Donna Gates, Salmon Falls Gallery; Jameson Johnson, The Boston Art Review; Robert Wiesenburger, The Clark, Nellie Prior, the Departure Reading Series; Karen Skolfield, poet laureate of Northampton; and Catherine Weiss, Northampton Poetry. Call to Artists The Nave Gallery, in partnership with the Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church, invites artists to participate in the curated exhibition Crossing the Line: Refugees in Search of Sanctuary. The juror is Gabriel Sosa. This call asks artists to share work created in response to today’s global refugee and immigrant crises, the greatest since the end of World War II. Crossing the Line: In Search of Sanctuary seeks art that explores stories behind the millions of displaced persons on either a macro or micro level. Call to Artists Applications are currently being accepted for the Fifth Annual Arts on the Green Evening at The Gardens at Elm Bank in Wellesley. On Thursday, August 15th, 5 – 7:30 pm, visitors will wander their beautiful gardens, enjoy live music, and stroll through their Art Walk. There will also be activities, tours and refreshments. Artists are invited to participate in the Art Walk in our gardens — display your work, offer your work for sale, and/or showcase your talents en plein air. This event is free to the public.
