Woodblock Printing BIG INK will host a monumental woodblock printing event at Dedee Shattuck Gallery this Spring. Artists interested in carving a woodblock of at least 24 by 36 inches are invited to apply to print with us. No prior experience is required and emerging, mid-career, and established visual artists are encouraged to apply. Upon acceptance, artists have two months to carve their designs, then meet at the gallery in Westport, MA and help print as a group. The public is invited to witness the demonstration and a printing bonanza ensures! Participation includes access to BIG INK’s woodblock carving video course leading up to the event, paper, ink, cleaning supplies, equipment usage, technical expertise during the event, and a high-res scan of the finished print. It is free to submit an application; accepted artists pay $300 to participate. Call to Artists BSA Space, Boston’s only center dedicated to the exploration of architecture and design, seeks curatorial proposals for its 2021 exhibition season. Writers Conference Free Tuition The MVICW Writers’ Contest offers two winners full tuition and lodging to attend the Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing’s Summer Writers’ Conference. The competition is open to anyone who will be 18 years or older at the start of the program. Interested applicants should submit one poem (1-3 pages in length), or one short story , novel excerpt, or creative nonfiction piece (up to 3000 words) with a $25 submission fee using the Submittable link below. Artist Residency The Arts Retreat artist residency program of the Cultural Center in New York Mills focuses on providing dedicated artists time for creative development and exploration. The program offers a unique taste of life in rural Minnesota while allowing the artists virtually uninterrupted time in which to immerse themselves in their artwork. We provide stays of two to six weeks for artists at no cost for room (solo occupancy of a one-bedroom house and access to studio space in their Cultural Center). Technology Art Entries are currently being accepted for a juried exhibition of art/technology art to open Wednesday May 27th through Sunday June 28th at Boston Cyberarts Gallery. They are looking for work that pairs art and technology in a thought provoking and visually engaging manner. They’re particularly interested in pieces that use technology to facilitate art, or art to observe technology from a novel perspective, preferably some combination of the two. Emerging Artists Residency Fellowship Applications for Halcyon Arts Lab Cohort 4, Fall 2020 are now open. This marks the beginning of their search for their fourth cohort of socially engaged and civic-minded artists. The Halcyon Arts Lab Fellowship is a five-month residential program based in Washington, DC that supports emerging artists who create work rooted in social change. Artist Residency The Trustees of Reservations have issued a call for applications to by Artist-in-Residence (AIR) at Naumkeag, a historic home and public garden located in Stockbridge, MA. The program offers an artist the opportunity to create a body of work at one of the most spectacular properties in the Berkshires, with views that have inspired artists for generations. The AIR will be provided a studio space seven days a week and a family membership to the Trustees of Reservations; the AIR will share their creative process with the community through scheduled open studios, workshops and artist talks developed in conjunction with Naumkeag’s engagement team. Emerging and established artists, as well as small collectives, are invited to apply. AIR must live within fifty miles of Naumkeag. Call for Art The Drawing Act 150 celebrates the 150th anniversary of Massachusetts passing “An Act relating to free instruction in drawing,” also called The Drawing Act. It was the first law in the nation requiring drawing to be taught in public schools. The Drawing Act 150 has issued a call for art – from anyone across the Commonwealth – to celebrate the anniversary. Make a 4×4 in drawing of something you see every day. It could possibly be displayed at a community art installation at the Massachusetts State House this May. Learn more.

Call for Art Healing Fibers, an annual non-juried art exhibit, is currently accepting work for Social Justice Stories. Artists are invited to submit art that addresses personal stories of themselves or relatives; or art that poses a question regarding/solution to the crisis violation of human rights and threatened social justice, whilst including fiber in the artwork. Why fiber? Because the threads of our stories are interwoven. In 2020, the call is open to all artists to address any social justice issue of their choice, addressed before or anew. Learn more.
