Along with the daily announcements from the principal (your pal and mine), the pledge of allegiance, and a student pledge, classical music is broadcast through the Ellen R. Hathaway elementary school’s intercom. Take a listen to this recent WGBH radio piece about this music program in New Bedford.

I am really showing my age…. but classical music was broadcast, probably from a record player, over the intercom system for decades in the elementary schools in Upper Darby, PA during our “rest’ period each day (this was in the 1950’s). Think of that: for the whole school year five days a week for maybe fifteeen minutes or so each day for seven years of K-6 school, chldren listened calmly to great classical music in a restful receptive environment (they even closed the blinds some to dim the room!). I’d say that is fantastic cultural conditioning and I recommend it heartily. It also is a great way to help kids move smoothly through their day.
