News and Notes from MCC Artist Fellows
We compile a monthly list of presentations, honors, publications, and events featuring past and present MCC Artist Fellows & Finalists. As you’ll see, the news is good – not just about these award-winning artists, but also about the breadth and vitality of contemporary arts throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.
Works by Ben Berman (Poetry Fellow ’08), Peter Brown (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’06), and Frannie Lindsay (Poetry Fellow ’06) appear in the current issue of Salamander Magazine.
Elizabeth Hughey (Poetry Fellow ’08) and Michael Teig (Poetry Fellow ’08) will read as part of the jubilat/Jones Reading Series. Theyll read Sunday, October 19, 3 PM, at the Jones Library in Amherst. A Q&A will follow the free reading.
Kim Adrian’s (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’08) essay “On Valentin Papadin’s Teach Yourself to be a Madman” is in the Fall 2008 issue of Tin House.
Steve Almond (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’08) has a number of October readings, listed on the events page of his website.
Kristin Bock’s (Poetry Fellow ’06) poetry collection Cloisters is being published this month by Tupelo Press. Kristin will read from Cloisters at Amherst Books on October 24, 8 PM, with a wine and cheese reception to follow. You can read a selection of Kristin’s poems here.
Michal Goldman’s (Film & Video Fellow ’07) documentary At Home in Utopia, about a groundbreaking Jewish labor housing cooperative in the Bronx, shows at two film festivals this month, the 24th Haifa International Film Festival in Israel and the Utopia Film Festival (October 25 and 26th) in Greenbelt, MD.
Masako Kamiya (Painting Fellow ’06) is among the artists exhibiting in the 2008 Dorchester Open Studios, Saturday October 25 and Sunday October 26.
Brian Knep (Sculpture/Installation Finalist ’07) is part of Act/React, an exhibition of interactive installation art at the Milwaukee Art Museum in Wisconsin, showing October 1, 2008-January 11, 2009. The show is curated by Boston Cyberarts Festival founder/director George Fifield.

Frannie Lindsay (Poetry Fellow ’06) will read at a party to celebrate the Dzanc Books: Best of the Web 2008 anthology, at the Grub Street space in Boston. The free event features Frannie, who is included in the anthology, along with writers Sarah Sweeney, Andrea Cohen, Myfanwy Collins, LaTanya McQueen, and Jacques Rancourt on Saturday, October 4, 7 PM, Grub Street.
Director Juan Mandelbaum (Film & Video Finalist ’07) will have five screenings of his stirring documentary Nuestros Desaparecidos (Our Disappeared) at the Museum of Fine Arts, October 16-November 1. Our Disappeared investigates the military torture and kidnapping of Argentinian women between 1976 and 1983. Juan will be present at each screening, along with a number of special guests.
Rania Matar’s (Photography Fellow ’07) photography exhibit “The Veil: Modesty, Fashion, Devotion or Statement” runs at the Center for Contemporary Arts, Abilene Texas, October-November 2008.
David Moore (Painting Fellow ’08) has two exhibitions of his work opening this month. David is part of the “Blur the Line” exhibition at Clark Gallery in Lincoln, October 2-30, opening reception October 4, 4-6 PM. Also, Robert Steele Gallery in New York shows his work October 10-November 8.
Sally Moore (Sculpture/Installation Finalist ’07) exhibits at the Barbara Krakow Gallery October 11-November 18, opening reception October 18, 3-5 PM.
Andrew Mowbray’s (Sculpture/Installation Finalist ’05) solo show Tempest Prognosticator just closed at Miami’s Gallery Diet.
Lydia Kann Nettler (Drawing Finalist ’00) presents large-scale charcoal and mixed media installations in Circling An Environmental Installation at the Towne Art Gallery at Wheelock College in Boston. Lydia’s installations speak “to
the transcendence of nature and its ability to remove consciousness of self as apart from the whole.” The show runs September 22 October 17, with an opening reception October 12, 11-1 pm in collaboration with the Fenway Alliance Opening Our Doors Day.
Mary O’Malley (Drawing Fellow ’06) is exhibiting in Overflow, “the work of three Somerville artists who explore the sublime in the art of wildness and excess,” at Laconia Gallery. The show runs October 3 to November 22, 2008. All three artists will be present at the opening on Friday, October 3, 5:30-8 PM.
Monica Raymond (Playwriting/New Theater Works Finalist ’07, Poetry Finalist ’08) participates in The Jerome 5, a showcase of the 2008-09 Jerome Fellows at the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis, MN. The event takes place Monday, October 20, 2008, 7 PM.
Salvatore Scibona (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’06) will read from his critically acclaimed debut novel The End at two events this month. Hell join fellow Provincetown author Heidi Jon Schmidt at the Cape Cod Museum of Art on Thursday, October 16, 6 PM. Hell also read at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown on October 25, 8 PM. Both events are free.
Cam Terwilliger (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’08) will give a Somerville Arts Council community benefit reading at Somerville Home, a long-term residential care facility. In addition to receiving an MCC Artist Fellowship in 2008, Cam received a Somerville Arts Council fellowship. The free event takes place Thursday, October 2, 3:30 PM, at Somerville Home, 117 Summer Street.
Deb Todd Wheeler’s (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’03) latest project, The Launch, is part of the exhibit Body Prop at the University of Northern Iowa, through Sunday, October 26. Curator Erica Duffy explains that the four participating artists “present objects that negotiate the relationship between the body and its environment.” Also, Deb is showing drawings and models in Figment’s Imagination at Miller Block Gallery, along with work by Tanit Sakakini and Jane D. Marsching (Photography Finalist ’03). October 17-November 29, opening reception Oct. 17, 6 PM.
