News and Notes from MCC Artist Fellows
We compile a monthly list of presentations, honors, publications, and events featuring past and present MCC Artist Fellows & Finalists. As you’ll see, the news is good – not just about these award-winning artists, but also about the breadth and vitality of contemporary arts throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.
Nell Breyer (Choreography Fellow ’06) has collaborated with Alissa Cardone, Lorraine Chapman, and Bronwen MacArthur (Choreography Finalists ’08) to create The Disappearing Woman, commissioned and developed by Summer Stages Dance at Concord Academy. The piece blends dance and digital media to explore the anxieties of three women in an increasingly dispersed, high-speed culture. The world premiere will be performed at the ICA Boston on Saturday, July 11, 7:30 PM.
Speaking of Alissa Cardone, she along with fellow Kinodance Company members (including 2009 Film & Video Fellow Alla Kovgan) created The Refractive Kinescope, a gallery installation with live performances taking place this summer/fall at Gallery 51 in North Adams. The installation opens July 25, with a live performance that night (6-8 PM) featuring Alissa and Michael Jahoda.
Economies of Scale, a show of more than 30 artists with small-scale works that think big, features a host of MCC fellows/finalists, including William Ciccariello (Painting Fellow ’06), Candice Smith Corby (Painting Fellow ’08), Jane D. Marsching (Photography Finalist ’03), Mary O’Malley (Drawing Fellow ’06), Rachel Perry Welty (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’09, Drawing Fellow ’04), Deb Todd Wheeler (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’03) and Yu-Wen Wu (Painting Fellow ’04). Works in the show, Miller Block Gallery’s summer exhibition, explore a wide array of ideas and deliver a big impact despite their small size and moderate price. It runs through August 1.
Gary Duehr (Photography Fellow ’03), Barbara Moody (Drawing Finalist ’04), and Nina Wishnok (Drawing Fellow ’06) are among the 26 artists showing in Alphabet Project 3 at the Essex Art Center in Lawrence, through August 13. (Gary = E, Barbara = K, and Nina = Q.)
Two past fellows are going to show in the just-announced DeCordova Sculpture Park + Museum 2010 Biennial: Liz Nofziger (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’05) and Laurel Sparks (Painting Fellow ’04) join numerous other New England artists for a new exhibition featuring 17 New England artists, opening January 2010. This exhibition will take over the majority of the Lincoln, Mass. museum, offering visitors a unique opportunity to look at the work of artists from across the region.
Peggy Diggs (Drawing Fellow ’02, Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’07) has work in Gaia and Global Warming: Women Artists Champion Nature at the Center for the Arts in Jackson, Wyoming, through September 28. For the show, a response to global climate change, Peggy contributes pieces from her WorkOut series.
Colleen Kiely (Painting Fellow ’98) is one of the artists showing in Frolic at Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY. The show, which runs through July 26, is a playful, exuberant exhibition of paintings, drawings, crafts, and sculpture.
Lisa Olstein’s (Poetry Fellow ’06) second poetry collection, Lost Alphabet, was just released by Copper Canyon Press.
Tracy Winn (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’08) reads from her short story collection Mrs. Somebody Somebody The Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley on July 8, 7 PM and at the Canaan Meeting House in Caanan, NH on July 9, 7:30 PM.
