Artists and other interested folks can attend a presentation by Julia Csekö this Thursday, November 19, 2020, 6:30 PM EST, as part of the Somerville Arts Council’s Home Alone Art Series.
The free artist talk is called Speaking Truth to Power. Julia Csekö will share her trajectory as an art maker and community organizer. From the artist’s description:
I will show a bit of my hometown (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and what it means to live in the iconic and gorgeous but violent city of Rio. How I have been adapting to living in Somerville, (and New England weather) for ten years now. Have a peek at what I’ve been up to in my residency studio at the Umbrella Center for the Arts! I will speak about the idea of making art as an act of resistance and how art and artists can be a powerful change agent in our society when we organize. In my recent work, I dive into John Lewis’ legacy, as well as the late beat poet Diane Di Prima and her Revolutionary Letters. We will go on a journey honoring artists, activists, and referential writers who have been teaching us to Speak Truth to Power and how we can amplify and put into practice these messages of equality, inclusion, unity, and peace.
