Of Note: Opportunities and Resources for Social Justice, COVID-19 Reopening
New England Dancers The Boston Dance Alliance has received a grant of $80,000 to support Dance and Disability: Building the Field which will center the leadership, expertise, and needs of practicing artists with physical disabilities including mobility, vision, and hearing impairments.This initiative is designed to support the development of personal networks and collective synergies, identify needed resources that do and do not currently exist, and establish paths forward for New England artists working in this important idiom. The majority of this grant will compensate the artists for their participation in a series of virtual conversations and activities beginning later this summer. Webinars with Arts Administrators Arts Administration Association New England is holding a series of “Sip and Chat” webinars with arts administrators from the region. The next discussions are June 25, 2020, 4 PM, featuring Sarah Turner (President, North Bennet Street School), Hayley Greenberg & Manny Cabanas (Owners/Founders, The Makery, Brookline), and Jessica Roscio (Director/Curator, Danforth Art Museum); and July 1, 2020, 4 PM, featuring Lecolion Washington (Executive Director, Community Music Center), Roxie Myhrum (Artistic Director, Puppet Showplace Theater), and Craig Cogan (Artistic Director, Boston Gay Men’s Chorus).
Community Writing Project The Boston Book Festival launched a new community writing project, At Home Boston, in partnership with the Boston Globe. Tell them your quarantine story in 200 words. Learn more.
Public Programming Proposals Hamiltonian Artists is launching a new initiative of public programming, Platform, that positions the organization as a hub for conversation among practitioners. For the first season, now through the Presidential election on November 3, artists, independent curators and organizers, organizations, and others are invited to submit a proposal for a public program that specifically addresses racial justice, social justice movements and practices, collective action, and other conversations that intersect with the arts. This is not a call for artist talks or studio visits. Emphasis will be placed on amplifying Black and underrepresented voices including communities of color, Indigenous people, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities. Programs will be selected on an ongoing basis throughout the Fall. Learn more.
Creative Placemaking Initiative Given the extraordinary events taking place, the city of Melrose has extended their deadline to June 28 and expanded their Call for Artists to include the larger community. The Call-for-Artists is now open to Massachusetts artists with a preference for those in the Boston Metro area. In order to maintain an authentic connection to Melrose, they are asking artists to consider how they might involve their community in the design or fabrication of their work. They are happy to pair selected artists up with specific organizations and volunteers as-needed. New England Art Fair AREA CODE, taking place August 2020, is the first art fair exclusively featuring contemporary artists with ties to New England. The fair’s main online section – juried by Octavio Zaya – will showcase approximately 50 solo presentations by a diverse group of New England artists. Art galleries, nonprofit organizations with exhibition spaces, and artists without gallery representation, working or based in the New England area, can apply. Learn more.

Center for Book Arts Artist Residency The Book Artist-in-Residence awards 3 to 4 residencies per year to artists who have demonstrated a commitment to the book arts as a key component of their artistic practice. This year long residency includes a cash stipend, materials budget, tuition waiver for all courses offered at CBA during the residency period, and 24-hour access to CBA printing and binding studios in Manhattan. Craft Artists Emergency Grants CERF+ is launching the COVID-19 Relief Grant Program to provide financial assistance to professional artists working in craft disciplines who are facing dire circumstances from the COVID-19 crisis. As part of CERF+’s broader COVID-19 crisis response strategies, this special program will provide one-time $1,000 grants to meet urgent food, housing and/or health insecurities. The grants will be awarded in two cycles: the application opens July 8th and the deadline for the first round will be July 29th, the second will be September 9th. Priority will be given to eligible artists facing the most severe financial pressures, and CERF+ will ensure that funds are dispersed throughout the country. Application opens July 8, 2020. Emergency Artist Grants Artist Relief will distribute $5,000 grants to artists facing dire financial emergencies due to COVID-19; serve as an ongoing informational resource; and co-launch the COVID-19 Impact Survey for Artists and Creative Workers, designed by Americans for the Arts, to better identify and address the needs of artists.
