My name is GennaRose Nethercott.
I received an Artist Fellowship in Fiction from Mass Cultural Council in 2018.
And I’m going to read to you an excerpt from my short story, 50 Beasts to Break Your Heart.
The form of this story I poached from something called The Latin Bestiary, which was a sort of encyclopedia compiled by Latin monks of all the known animals. So what I did is I stole that format and then I invented a few beasts of my own.

I work in a number of different genres. I’m a fiction writer, poet, lyricist, performer, all manner of experimental blends between all of those. And those blend even further through collaborations with musicians, painters, puppeteers. Storytelling is at the root of everything I do. And all my writing is rooted in the weird, the fantastical, and the way that magical lore can sort of serve as a mirror of ourselves and our memories, and our societies. Our fears, our loves. So ultimately I change up the shape of the box a lot, as in I change up the form in which I’m writing. But the contents of that box remain fairly consistent.
I’m currently working on the end of a novel. It definitely sports my tell-tale spooky brand of folklore mixed with contemporary pithiness along with a lot of gutting human longing, which is my main thing. And yeah, I’m excited to see how it turns out and I’m excited for everyone else to get a chance to read it too.
