Fellows Notes is a monthly listing of the latest news from awardees in our Artist Fellowships Program.
Animated films by the late Karen Aqua (Film & Video Fellow ’11) will screen at the ICA Boston, with live soundtracks by Ken Field (Music Composition Finalist ’17) and the Ken Field Alto Sax Quartet plus drum (3/22, 8 PM). The two artists were married until Karen Aqua’s untimely passing in 2011. Read about the artists in Greg Cook’s arts journal Wonderland.
Sarah Bliss (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’13) curated and has work in Shaking the Frame: Experimental Film from the AgX Film Collective, a program of film screening at Clark University’s Traina Center for Visual & Performing Arts (3/21, 7:30-9 PM). Kimberly Forero-Arnias (Film & Video Fellow ’13), Kathryn Ramey (Film & Video Fellow ’15) and Robert Todd (Film and Video Finalist ’15) are also included in the program.
Linda Bond (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’13) and Gary Duehr (Photography Fellow ’03) join Chantal Zakari for the exhibition I Read the News Today, Oh Boy at Brickbottom Gallery in Somerville (3/7-4/6, opening reception 3/10, 5-7 PM).
Sean Downey (Painting Fellow ’14), Joel Janowitz (Painting Fellow ’16, ’08), Catherine Kehoe (Painting Fellow ’16), Susan Lichtman (Painting Fellow ’18), Sarah Lubin (Painting Finalist ’18) are all exhibiting in Figure Focus at Northeastern University Gallery 360 (3/14-4/21, opening reception 3/14, 6-8 PM).
Several past Fellows/Finalists are exhibiting in the Art on Paper fair in New York City (3/7-3/10): Linda Etcoff (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’16), Chuck Holtzman (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’06), and Catherine McCarthy (Painting Fellow ’04) are exhibiting with Clark Gallery; and Nona Hershey (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’04) with Dolan/Maxwell.
Marky Kauffmann (Photography Fellow ’17) curated and has work in the exhibition Outspoken/Expanded for the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts, in honor of Women’s History Month. The exhibition includes photography by Rania Matar (Photography Fellow ’11, ’07).

Kim Adrian (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’06) reads from her book Sock at Mailroom in New York City (3/12, 7 PM). She joins other authors with books in the Object Lessons series.
Nina Stolz Bellucci (Painting Fellow ’18) has a solo exhibition, Light Moves, at Musa Collective Gallery in Boston (3/2-3/30, opening reception 3/2, 4-6 PM). A new collection of her work has been released on the online platform Uprise Art.
Denise Bergman (Poetry Finalist ’14) has a new poetry book, Three Hands None, published by Black Lawrence Press. The launch reading will be at Porter Square Books in Cambridge (4/10, 7 PM).
Steven Bogart‘s (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’15) play Made in Heaven will have a staged reading at North Shore Readers Theater Collaborative in Newburyport (3/23, 10 AM).
Sari Boren (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Finalist ’14) was selected to participate in the Company One PlayLab Unit.
Prilla Smith Brackett (Painting Finalist ’12) has funded a new award, hosted by the Davis Museum at Wellesley College. The Prilla Smith Brackett Award honors an outstanding woman visual artist living in the Greater Boston area. The $15,000 award is open to artists who identify as female, live in Greater Boston, and have five or more years of experience working in painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, photography, film, video, and/or media arts.
Laura Chasman (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’96) has a solo show, Barely Visible, at Gallery Kayafas (3/1-4/6, reception 4/5, 5:30-8 PM). Read about the exhibition in Greg Cook’s arts journal Wonderland.
Patrick Donnelly (Poetry Fellow ’08) has a new poetry collection, Little-Known Operas, and his upcoming readings include Del Rossi’s Trattoria in Dublin, NH (3/10), Lily Poetry Salon in Needham (3/15), Books on the Square in Providence, RI (3/22), and Amherst Books (4/5).
Jane Gillooly (Film & Video Fellow ’13, ’07) will screen her new film Where the Pavement Ends at Museum of Fine Arts Boston (3/10, 3 PM), co-presented with the Roxbury International Film Festival.
Basia Goszczynska (Film & Video Fellow ’13) curated the exhibition Regarding the Wild in Brooklyn (3/3-3/31, opening reception 3/8, 6-9 PM).
Sara Hendren‘s (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’18) first book, about the unexpected places where disability is at the heart of design, is forthcoming from Riverheard/Penguin. She will join author George Estreich for a literary discussion at MIT Press Bookstore (3/14, 6 PM).
Jan Johnson (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’10) has a two-person exhibition with Walter Wright called Thickets at Greenwald Gallery in Lowell (3/6-3/31). The exhibition features prints, installation, digital animation and video. Along with this exhibition, she has printmaking in Built / Broken at Clark University Schiltkamp Gallery (3/20-4/17, opening reception 3/20 4-6 PM).
Stella Johnson (Photography Finalist ’13) has a solo exhibition ZOI at Leica Gallery in Boston (3/7-4/21, opening reception and artist talk 3/7, 6-9 PM).
Dinora Justice (Painting Finalist ’18) has a solo exhibition Come to Me She Said at Gallery NAGA (3/1-3/30).
Marky Kauffmann (Photography Fellow ’17), along with curating/exhibiting in Outspoken/Expanded at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts (see above), has photography in The Fence. The Fence is an outdoor exhibit from United Photo Industries, displayed on Albany Street in SOWA, March 25th through the summer.
Colleen Kiely (Painting Fellow ’98) has three paintings in the group exhibition AVATARS//ghosts at Nave Gallery in Somerville (3/22-4/13, opening reception 3/22, 7-9 PM). The artist recently exhibited at New Bedford Art Museum and was selected as a finalist for the Hopper Prize.
John Kuntz‘s (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’15) play The Hotel Nephenthe has a production at Phoenix Theatre in Indianapolis (3/1-3/24).
Joy Ladin (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Finalist ’12) will lead a discussion about editorial revisions of Emily Dickinson’s work, as part of the Emily Dickinson Museum’s Poetry Discussion Group at the Amherst College Frost Library (3/15, noon-2 PM).
Congratulations to Greg Lam (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’19), who is the inaugural Pao Fellow of the Company One PlayLab. His play Repossessed will have a reading/live podcast recording at Dorchester Art Project (3/9, 6 PM reception, 7 PM broadcast) – RSVP to attend.
Stefanie Lubkowski (Music Composition Finalist ’15) wrote the clarinet duo First You Draw a Line, which premieres on Equilibrium’s Four of A Kind concert at the New School of Music in Cambridge (3/9, 7:30 PM). The composer’s work can be heard in a recent episode of the Bait/Switch podcast.
Irene Lusztig (Film & Video Fellow ’03) will screen her film Yours in Sisterhood at Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, part of The DocYard Series (3/18, 7 PM). The filmmaker will attend in person for discussion with Erin Trahan.
Rania Matar (Photography Fellow ’11, ’07), along with having work in Outspoken/Expanded at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts (see above), has a solo exhibition of photography, SHE, at Robert Klein Gallery in Boston (3/16-4/27, opening reception 3/16, 2-5 PM).
Brendan Mathews (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’12) has published a new short story collection, This Is Not a Love Song. Upcoming readings include the The Book House in Albany, NY (3/16, 3 PM).
Adam Mazo‘s (Film & Video Finalist ’17) film with Ben Pender-Cudip, Dawnland, has won a Maine Oscar for “Most Necessary Maine Documentary” from Maine Today.
Caitlin McCarthy (Dramatic Writing Finalist ’11) will be featured in the Women In Film New England Member Spotlight.
Mary Bucci McCoy (Painting Fellow ’12) has work in the group exhibition Dozer at The Neon Heater Art Gallery in Findlay, OH (3/1-3/28).
Richard Michelson (Poetry Fellow ’16) is among the participants in the Charlotte S. Huck Children’s Literature Festival in Redlands, CA (3/7-3/9).
John Minigan (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’19) has a reading of his play Breaking the Shakespeare Code at Wellesley College (3/11, 7:30 PM). The play will have a full, revival production by Hey Jonte in New York City in May. Also, John Minigan’s play Queen of Sad Mischance was accepted for the Great Plains Theatre Conference in Omaha, NE, taking place May/June.
January O’Neil (Poetry Finalist ’18) joins Catherine Barnett for a reading as part of the Blacksmith House Poetry Series (3/18, 8 PM).
Monica Raymond‘s (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’13) play The Owl Girl will have its New York City premiere at THML Theatre Company (2/28-3/16). Her short play The Black Widow Curse was part of the Romeo and Juliet Bake-Off at the Huntington Theatre (3/18)
Susan Rivo‘s (Film & Video Finalist ’11) documentary film Left on Pearl has numerous screenings this month, including Northeastern University’s Neighborhood Matters Series (3/19), Coolidge Corner Public Library (3/23), Jamaica Plain Public Library (3/28), and The Actor’s Studio in Newburyport (3/31).
Congratulations to Anna VQ Ross (Poetry Fellow ’18), who is Author of the Month for March at the Boston Athenaeum.
Nancy Selvage (Crafts Fellow ’13) is exhibiting the installation Intemperate Zone at Boston Sculptors Gallery (thru 3/31). The installation is created in collaboration with poet Ros Zimmermann.
Karen Skolfield (Poetry Fellow ’14), whose poetry collection Battle Dress is forthcoming, was recently interviewed in 32poems.
Sarah Sousa (Poetry Fellow ’16) received the C&R Press Summer Tidepool Chapbook Contest, and her chapbook Yell has been published.
Tracy Heather Strain (Film & Video Fellow ’07) was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture (Television) for her film Lorraine Hansberry: Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart.
Naoe Suzuki (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’06) has work in the exhibition Crossing Boundaries: Art // Maps at the Boston Public Library Leventhal Map and Education Center (thru 4/21) and will participate in an Evening with the Artist event (3/7, 6-8 PM). Free, but registration required. She’ll also participate in the panel discussion Crossing Boundaries: How Maps Prompt the Artist’s Eye (4/2, 6-7 PM).
Michael Zelehoski (Painting Fellow ’10) created the installation The Rapture, which exhibits in Times Square in New York City, curated by Ché Morales and presented by Abstrkt, with an immersive reveal event in Duffy Square (3/5, 10 AM).
