Many Mass Cultural Council awardees are exhibiting in the AREA CODE Art Fair (thru 8/31), online and throughout the Boston area. Virginia Bradley (Painting Finalist ’20), Jessica Fisher (Poetry Finalist ’20), Warner Friedman (Painting Fellow ’20, ’12), Amanda Giracca (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Finalist ’20), Mary Lum (Painting Fellow ’20), Matthew Muller (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Finalist ’20), and Tom James Truss III and Matthew Cumbie (Choreography Finalists ’20) are all featured in a Berkshire Eagle story about Mass Cultural Council awardees in Berkshire County.
Jodi Colella (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’19), Cynthia Consentino (Crafts Fellow ’07), Niho Kozuru (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’09), and Megumi Naitoh (Crafts Fellow ’03) are among the artists exhibiting in Shelter, Place, Social, Distance at the newly reopened Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton (thru 11/22). Joel Janowitz (Painting Fellow ’16, ’08, ’79, ’75), Catherine Kernan (Drawing & Printmaking Finalist ’16), Debra Olin (Drawing & Printmaking Finalist ’18), and Nina Wishnok (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’06) are among the artists exhibiting in Singular and Serial at Cove Street Arts in Portland, ME (thru 9/19). Catherine Kernan also co-curated the exhibition.
Congratulations to Siobhan Landry (Film & Video Fellow ’19), Julie Mallozzi (Film & Video Finalist ’15, ’07), and Lisa Olivieri (Film & Video Finalist ’09), who are among the New England-based nonfiction filmmakers receiving funding in the latest round of LEF Foundation Moving Image Awards. The recent grants include support to projects in the Early Development and Pre-production stages.

Allison Adair (Poetry Finalist 20) recently published her poetry collection The Clearing, winner of the Max Ritvo Poetry Prize from Milkweed Press. She published an essay, The Spiritual Mysteries Beneath Our Feet, in the online journal Lit Hub.
Hannah Barrett (Painting Fellow ’04) was appointed director of the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, NY.
Sari Boren (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Finalist ’14) co-wrote the short play A Single Drop of Water Makes an Ocean with Amy Merrill, and it will have a virtual performance in The Great Demand: an evening of short plays confronting the 19th Amendment by Company One Theater (8/18, 7 PM).
Cree Bruins (Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’10) has a solo exhibition, Drawn to Film, at Kingston Gallery (8/26-9/20).
Jodi Colella (Sculpture/Installations/New Genres Fellow ’19) has a solo exhibition, Faculty of Utterance, at Boston Sculptors Gallery (thru 9/20).
Kelley Donovan (Choreography Fellow ’12) is hosting a monthly Online Virtual SpeakEasy featuring dance, poetry and other arts, on the 4th Saturday of the month (8/22, 9/26, 10/24, 11/21, 12/12). Any artist may apply and viewers may join, the event is donation based.
Rebecca Doughty (Painting Finalist ’10) has a solo exhibition of paintings at The Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown (8/14-8/31, virtual walkthrough on Instagram Live, hosted by Gallery Director, Mike Carroll, 8/14 7 PM).
Janet Echelman‘s (Crafts Fellow, Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’09) public art installation Bending Arc in St. Petersburg, FL was featured on the online arts journal My Modern Met.
Ken Field (Music Composition Finalist ’17) performs with bassist Blake Newman in the outdoor courtyard of the Boston Public Library for their annual summer concert series (8/28, 12:30-1:30 PM). There will be no live audience – the concert will livestream to YouTube. Field & Newman will draw from the repertoires of Field’s Revolutionary Snake Ensemble & the Ken Field Nonstandards, in addition to improvisations utilizing looping electronics.
Dana Filibert (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres Fellow ’15) has work in the juried online exhibition Sizzle! from Bromfield Gallery.
Magdalena Gomez‘s (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’01) short play Apartment 19 will premiere in a virtual production by Burning Coal Theater Company (8/19, 7:00 PM), as part of The 19th Amendment Project.
Sara Hendren (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’18) publishes her nonfiction book What Can a Body Do?: How We Meet the Built World (Riverhead/Penguin Random House 2020), on August 18, 2020.
Elizabeth James-Perry (Traditional Arts Fellow ’14) is featured on Mass Cultural Council’s Youtube Channel in a video (embedded above) created by videographer Daniel Jacobs and Mass Cultural Council Folk Arts & Heritage Program Manager Maggie Holtzberg.
Sarah Stewart Johnson (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’14) published her nonfiction book The Sirens of Mars in July. She and the book were featured in The New York Times and on NPR’s Living on Earth.
Marky Kauffmann (Photography Fellow ’17) has photography in the exhibit Landscape at the PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, VT in August. Also, four images from her Landscapes and Prayers portfolio are included in The Hand Magazine‘s 29th edition. The magazine is dedicated to alternative and historic photographic processes and printmaking.
Anne Leone (Painting Finalist ’20) is exhibiting paintings at Galerie Friedmann-Hahn in Berlin, Germany (August) and at CK Contemporary in San Francisco (September). She is also featured in the Hamptons’ Art Fair this summer through M Fine Arts Galerie in Boston.
Steve Locke (Photography Finalist ’17, Painting Finalist ’14) has a solo exhibition of painting, Homage to The Auction Block, at LaMontagne Gallery in Boston (thru 9/8). Read a review of the exhibition from Cate McQuaid of The Boston Globe.
Holly Lynton‘s (Photography Fellow ’13) Bare Handed series is featured in the Spring issues of Southern Cultures Journal. Images from Bare Handed will exhibit at the Yale University Art Gallery in On the Basis of Art: 150 Years of Women at Yale (dates TBD).
Keith Maddy (Drawing & Printmaking Finalist ’16) has a solo, virtual exhibition, Inner Flight, at Howard Yezerski Gallery.
Rania Matar (Photography Fellow ’11, ’07) is selling prints of her work to raise funds to the Social & Economic Action for Lebanon (SEAL) Beirut Emergency Fund, in response to the recent explosion.
Brendan Mathews‘ (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’12) short story collection This Is Not a Love Song was named a “Must Read” by the Massachusetts Book Awards, which makes it one of 12 books in contention for the prize (award winner and two honor books will be announced in August). This Is Not a Love Song was also recently shortlisted for the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing, which is awarded by the Stanford Libraries. The winner will be announced in late summer or early fall.
Adam Mazo (Film & Video Finalist ’17) will screen his films with Ben Pender-Cudlip, Dawnland and Dear Georgina, in an event co-presented with the National Indian Education Association, followed by a live Q & A.
Caitlin McCarthy (Dramatic Writing Finalist ’11) shared that Stephen Nemeth is attached to produce and Tom Gilroy is attached to direct her film script Wonder Drug. The project was featured in Worcester Magazine.
Joshua Meyers (Painting Fellow ’10) has an exhibition of paintings, Chronicity at Rice Polak Gallery in Provincetown (8/6-8/19). Watch a video featuring the artist. See Rice Polak’s virtual viewing room.
Monica Raymond‘s (Dramatic Writing Fellow ’13) poem After the Fire was selected to receive the 2020 E.E. Cummings Prize from the New England Poetry Club. There will be an awardees’ reading in September (date TBD).
Rishi Reddi (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’04), along with writing fiction, is also an environmental lawyer and the the director of environmental justice at the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. WBUR recently interviewed her about her work.
Mehmet Ali Sanlikol (Music Composition Finalist ’19) has composed and created a new album, The Rise Up (released 8/21). The album was commissioned by and features NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman and received both the Copland and New Music USA grants. Watch a video for a song from the album, A Vicious Murder, blending animation and performance footage.
