For ten years, the Boston Theater Marathon (May 16-17, 2009) has been an occasion for the New England theater community to come together for a slew of new plays featuring an army of local artists. Its winning model – 50 short plays performed by 50 theater companies in one day – continues this year, with a twist: on May 16, the day before all 50 ten-minute plays are performed, the “Warm-up Laps” will feature free readings of three new full-length plays by Alan Brody, Kirsten Greenidge, and Theresa Rebeck.
According to Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, which runs the Marathon in partnership with the Boston Center for the Arts (the event venue), the inclusion of the “Warm-up Laps” this year is part of a long-range plan to expand the Marathon into a multi-venue community event, similar to the famed arts festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
It’ll be interesting to see what opportunities this might open up for Massachusetts theater artists.
