Quote by Anita Walker, Mass Cultural Council executive director
Last month, various news outlets reported that federal funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is in danger of elimination. Mass Cultural Council Executive Director Anita Walker summarized the possible funding threat in a recent essay exploring the arts, democracy, and the legacy of President John F. Kennedy, whose efforts led to the creation of NEA and NEH.
Supporters of arts and culture in the Commonwealth can be gratified to know that elimination of arts and culture funding is not expected on a state level, at least not in the near term. Governor Baker’s recently announced budget proposal for fiscal year 2018 includes a small increase for arts and culture funding in Massachusetts. The Governor’s budget proposal is the first step in a months-long process involving both the State Senate and House.
