Request for Proposals Proposals sought for inclusion in for the 2019-2020 season at The Dance Complex in Cambridge, MA. Priorities for inclusion for either individual artists or companies include artistic quality, unique programming, solid and successful self-production history. The Dance Complex seeks a balance of a variety of genres overall for the series. The Dance Complex will support the series and artists with augmented press/media, professional advice in both production and artistic concerns. Options for sharing evenings/weekend among more than one artist is possible and encouraged, as is interest from artists beyond the immediate region. A general description of the Julie Ince Thompson Theatre is included on our website. Requests for performances in alternative spaces in the building, including our new street level Studio 7, will be considered. Fees will be determined in dialogue with The Dance Complex and factor space usage and other variables.

Writer Residency Applications are currently being accepted for the The Kerouac Project which provides four residencies a year to writers of any stripe or age, living anywhere in the world. In the past they have accepted writers with no formal writing education alongside those with MFA’s and impressive résumés. You will be judged on the quality of the writing sample you submit. Each residency consists of approximately a three month stay in the cottage where Jack Kerouac wrote his novel Dharma Bums. Utilities and a food stipend of $1,000 are included. Learn more.

Open Call For Video Art & Short Films HOT STEAM II is having an open call for video art and short films that explore the magic combination of science, art, and technology. HOT STEAM is an annual screening that happens in Cambridge, Massachusetts during the Cambridge Science Festival. This year the MIT Museum has agreed to host the screening on April 18th, 2019. The goal of this event is to bring scientists and artists together to exhibit and discuss science in an accessible and exciting way (meaning videos should appeal to a wide audience – children and adults alike). They are looking for films/videos that are short, interesting, strange and bizarre. Interpretation of the theme can be very loose. Videos must be 5 minutes or less. There is no submission fee. Boston-area Female Artists The Prilla Smith Brackett Award at the Davis Museum at Wellesley College honors an outstanding woman visual artist living in the Greater Boston area. The $15,000 award is funded by Wellesley alum Prilla Smith Brackett. Eligible artists identify as female, live in Greater Boston, and have five or more years of experience working in painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, photography, film, video, and/or media arts. Community-Engaged Artists Applications are currently being accepted for the Enterprise Rose Fellowship. Enterprise seeks community-based designers with training in architecture and community-based artists in all disciplines, including but not limited to visual and performing arts, traditional and folk arts, digital media, dance, theater, literary arts and multi-media. Photographers The Dorothea Lange–Paul Taylor Prize was created by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University to encourage collaboration between documentary writers and photographers in the tradition of the acclaimed photographer Dorothea Lange and writer and social scientist Paul Taylor. The Lange-Taylor Prize is now intended to support artists, working alone or in teams, who have undertaken extended, ongoing fieldwork projects that fully exploit the relationship of words and images in the powerful, persuasive representation of a subject. (The prize is not awarded for completed projects, to artists who are seeking funds to produce a book, exhibit, website, or other outcomes.) The winner receives $10,000, features in Center for Documentary Studies’ digital publications, and inclusion in the Archive of Documentary Arts at Rubenstein Library, Duke University. Learn more.

Grant Program for Dancers Career Transition For Dancers, a project of Boston Dance Alliance’s partner The Actors Fund, has a new grant program. Dancers with at least 5 years professional performing experience can apply for Professional Development grants ($1,000), which can be used to create a non-dance income as well as build marketable skills. Scholarships for undergraduate (up to $2,000) and graduate degrees (up to $5,000) are also offered to dancers with at least 7 years professional dance experience. To learn about additional application criteria as well as the range of services offered by The Actors Fund, dance professionals can register for a bi-weekly national dancer orientation. All dancers, from early career to mid-career to retired from performing, can work with career counselors – at no cost – in person or remotely. Yes, this is available to dancers in New England!
