Artist Susan Lyman, on KEEPER OF CRANBOURNE CHASE: “Cranbourne Chase is one of many woods in Windsor Great Park, site of the former hunting grounds of the British royalty, a huge track of land south of Windsor Castle. That’s an (over 500 years) English oak pollard, and is one of thousands still standing. A few are 1000 years old and are barely standing – one is held upright with welded steel beams. They sprout a few new branches each year but most look like craggy old men (and women), convoluted stumps that you can’t even begin to put your arms around, with a few green sprigs of new growth at the top. There is still a keeper of sorts, a British fellow, a retired tree surgeon, and his wife who reside in the old keeper’s house at Cranbourne Tower.”
