News and Notes from MCC Artist Fellows
We compile a monthly list of presentations, honors, publications, and events featuring past and present MCC Artist Fellows & Finalists. As you’ll see, the news is good – not just about these award-winning artists, but also about the breadth and vitality of contemporary arts throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.
Congratulations to David Binder (Photography Fellow ’01), who received a prestigious CINE Golden Eagle Award for his documentary Calling My Children. Previous recipients of the award, which honors excellence in professional and independent film works as well as in television programming, include Ken Burns, Albert Maysles, Steven Spielberg, and Ron Howard. Calling My Children, a documentary short exploring one family’s struggle in the face of loss, has also been selected for an Official Screening at the San Diego Black Film Festival, January 28 to 31, 2010.
Kurt Cole Eidsvig (Poetry Fellow ’04) received an Art Writing Workshop fellowship from the Warhol Foundation / Creative Capital to work on art writing projects alongside critic Avis Berman. In addition, a series of Kurt’s poems will appear in the online arts journal Big RED and Shiny in the upcoming months. Each poem will focus on art in some respect: an artist, a show, a piece of artwork – check out the first installment.
Rebecca Kaiser Gibson (Poetry Fellow ’08) recently joined Ellen Steinbaum for a poetry reading at the Boston Athenaeum. The two poets read on Wedesnday, January 6 as part of the Athenauem’s ongoing series of poetry readings. Incidentally, Rebecca has poetry forthcoming in Pleiades.
Niho Kozuru (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’09) has a solo exhibition, Liquid Sunshine, at 555 California St in San Francisco, in the Bank of America/Concourse Gallery. The show runs through March 6. Exhibitions at the space are curated by Casey & Associates.
The online literary magazine qarrtsiluni.com nominated Monica Raymond’s (Playwriting Finalist ’07, Poetry Finalist ’08) poem “Economies” for a Pushcart Prize. Also, her poem “What I Want You For” appeared recently in the first edition of the new short poem magazine, Concise Delight. Shakespeare’s Monkey published “Carrot” and “Parsnip” in their issue on the body, and Red-Headed Stepchild published “Lion Dream.” In playwriting news: Monica’s SMOKING MONOLOGUE, most recently performed by the author as part of Cambridge River Festival 2008, is included in Urgent Maturity, a collection of monologues about mothers and daughters published by the International Center for Women Playwrights. NOVICES, peformed by Actor’s Shakespeare in the 2008 Boston Theater Marathon, is forthcoming in Smith and Kraus’s Best 10 Minute Plays 2009.
Karen Shepard’s (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’02) short story “There Be Monsters” is in the Winter 2010 issue of Tin House.
Deb Todd Wheeler (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’03) is among the artists in Exchange at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art in Portland, ME. The show features diverse approaches to collaboration as a means of exchange. Deb’s installation concerns technology as a mediator for human interaction with the environment. As part of her participation, Deb will coordinate a large participatory project that promotes the common good of joined labor forces. The show runs January 20 through April 11, 2010, with an opening reception on January 20, 5-8 PM.
