News and Notes from MCC Artist Fellows
The Boston premiere of Jane Gillooly’s (Film & Video Fellow ’07) documentary “Today the Hawk Takes One Chick” will take place at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art. The film, which garnered Jane a 2007 Artist Fellowship, explores the stories of Swaziland’s “gogos” – grandmothers who have watched their children’s generation decimated by HIV/AIDS and who must raise their grandchildren as their own. This powerful film plays Saturday, February 9, 7 PM. Jane will also travel to Mexico City to present the film’s international premiere at the Festival of International Contemporary Cinema (FICCO) February 21-26.
Brian Knep (Sculpture/Installation Finalist ’07) is one of the artists featured in “Some Sort of Uncertainty” at Axiom Gallery. The exhibition, presented in collaboration with Art Interactive, includes fascinating work marked by immersive and/or interactive elements. Brian describes his new piece, Expand, this way: “Small creatures churn through the walls, becoming visible only when viewers are present. Their frantic lives are spent repeating the same, unsuccessful attempt to free themselves… They seem to cover all available surfaces, waiting only for us to turn our attention, in the form of a projected light, upon them.” Also in the show is Liz Nofziger, (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’05) whose pieces nowhere I and nowhere II use familiar elements to blur the lines between attraction and repulsion, as well as high and low art. The exhibit runs through February 17.
Monica Raymond’s (Playwriting/New Theater Works Finalist ’07) short play “Novices,” a contemporary take on “Taming of the Shrew” set in an Au Bon Pain, is part of Centastage’s “Plays on Tap.” The evening of plays runs at the Boston Center for the Arts Black Box Theatre February 15-March 1, Thursday at 7:30 PM, Friday and Sat at 8PM, Sunday at 3PM. Also, congratulations to Monica, who is one of only 15 playwrights selected as finalists for Jerome Fellowships by the Playwright’s Center in Minneapolis.
