News and Notes from MCC Artist Fellows
We compile a monthly list of presentations, honors, publications, and events featuring past and present MCC Artist Fellows & Finalists. As you’ll see, the news is good – not just about these award-winning artists, but also about the breadth and vitality of contemporary arts throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.
Claire Beckett (Photography Fellow ’07) is part of the exhibition UNSCR-1325, which is on view through April 11, 2009 at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York. Several of Claire’s photographs of American soldiers from the series “In Training” are featured in the exhibition. UNSCR-1325 is organized around UN Security Council Resolution 1325 which addresses the impact of war and conflict on women and women’s contributions to conflict prevention, resolution and sustainable peace efforts. Andrew Bujalskis (Film & Video Fellow ’03) film Beeswax is part of the 7th Annual Independent Film Festival Boston, April 22-28.
The premiere performance of Peter Child’s (Music Composition Fellow ’86, ’89, Finalist ’03) Louisa’s War, for orchestra, women’s chorus and narrator takes place at the Tsai Center, Boston, April 25, 8 PM. The performance features the New England Philharmonic Orchestra, Chorus Pro Musica and Simmons Chorale, and Joyce Kulhawik, narrator.
Patrick Donnelly (Poetry Fellow ’08) reads with Sara London at “A celebration of Salamander at Newtonville Books,” on Sunday, April 19, at 2 PM.
Michael Hoerman (Poetry Fellow ’04) was hired as the assistant director of Voices Breaking Boundaries, a multidisciplinary arts organization in Houston, TX with a mission to cross borders, sustain dialogue, and incite social justice through art.
Elizabeth Hughey (Poetry Fellow ’08) joins Chris Bachelder, Jedediah Berry & Lisa Olstein (Poetry Fellow ’06) at the Wnderarts Gallery as part of the Amherst Lit Series on Thursday, April 2, 7 PM. Also, she reads with Darcie Dennigan & Ryan Flaherty on Monday, April 13, 7 PM, part of the Slope Editions Poetry Reading Series at The Rendezvous in Turners Falls.
Julie Mallozzi’s (Film & Video Finalist ’07) short video 25th & Mission will be in a group show called Locality at the Mission Arts Center, San Francisco, April 2-16.
Jane D. Marsching (Photography Fellow ’99) and Deb Todd Wheeler (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’03) have work in Near Everywhere, which opened last week at GASP (Gallery Artists Studio Projects) in Brookline. The show features the work of Jane and Deb alongside art by Ellen Driscoll, Marguerite Kahrl, Troy David Ouellete, Adriane Coburn, and Vivan Sundaram. It runs through May 2.
Caleb Neelon (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’07) is participating in the Design as Social Agent event at the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, as part of the ICA/AIGA Design Series, on Saturday, April 4, 10 AM to 5 PM. Its a full day of conversation on design and culture, featuring Caleb along with Steve Heller, Elliott Earls, Nicholas Blechman, PIXNIT Productions, Kevin Grady and more.
John Osorio-Buck (Sculpture/Installation Finalist ’07) is one of seven artists chosen from a pool of more than 200 to be named a School of the Museum of Fine Arts Traveling Scholar. The program provides each artist with traveling funds to further develop and inform their work. Work by the SMFA Traveling Scholars will be on view at the MFA through May 2.
Monica Raymonds (Playwriting/New Theater Works Finalist ’07, Poetry Finalist ’08) poem Moth and Rat (which appears on the Gallery@MCC), was a finalist for the anthology Best of the Net, nominated by Dave Bonta and Beth Adams of qarrtsiluni.com. Also, scenes from Monica’s play A to Z were recently performed at Boston Playwrights Theatre as part of the March 28 SWAN DAY event, care of The Fund for Women Artists.
On March 16, Salvatore Scibona (Fiction/Creative Nonfiction Fellow ’06) was announced as the winner of the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction Award. The award features a $10,000 prize and puts Salvatore in the company of such past winners as Jonathan Safran Foer, Monique Truong, and Colson Whitehead.
Debra Weisberg (Drawing Fellow ’08) joins Michelle Samour (Crafts Fellow ’03), Audrey Goldstein, and Julia Shepley in Material Drawing at the Danforth Museum of Art in Framingham. The show runs through May 17.
Rachel Perry Welty (Drawing/Printmaking/Artist Books Fellow ’04) has two new works in a group show called microwave, seven, curated by Jose Bienvenu, at Judi Rotenberg Gallery April 2-26, opening reception, April 2, 6-8 PM.
Along with showing work in the above-mentioned Near Everywhere, Deb Todd Wheeler (Sculpture/Installation Fellow ’03) recently showed photographs from her Consumer Garden installation at AIPAD in New York City (care of Miller Block Gallery). Shell be participating in the Megapolis: Audio Art and Documentary Festival at Pierre Menard Gallery, Harvard Square in Cambridge, April 24-26. She encourages interested parties to “come experience AC/DC at your own pace, on the bike-powered, bike-driven 8 track “unit” that Davis O’Brien and I have been working on.” If you want to experience yet another dimension of Deb’s work, check out her podcast at at WMBR 88.1 FM, Live at the Workbench, or her new book, Ludicrum. The book features exhibition images from the John Michael Kohler Art Center, The Photographic Resource Center, The Wriston Art Center, and more, and essay and text by curators Lena Vigna and Barbara O’Brien.
