Artist’s Voice: Michelle Samour

Michelle Samour (Mass Cultural Council Drawing & Printmaking Fellow ’14), creates sublime pigmented handmade paperworks.  Her recent project Borders and Boundaries, Looking for Palestine, explores the multifaceted challenges of the Palestinian Diaspora.

In this series, “Borders and Boundaries,” I am referencing the traditional crafts and cartography of the Middle East, beginning with my own history as one of the Palestinian Diaspora, to talk about how the redefinition of borders by colonialists over a hundred years ago continues to create disruption and chaos in the Middle East.

Using the tropes of indigenous design that I grew up with (oriental rugs, Palestinian costume and embroidery, mother of pearl/abalone handiwork), my work celebrates the cultural history of this region while at the same time subversively critiquing it. The resulting work’s seemingly purely decorative appearance and jewel-like qualities, are methods for speaking about the value of land and its preciousness. I am interested in drawing the viewer into a narrative whose history of conflict is in contrast to the work’s aesthetic richness.

All of the images in this first series of “Borders and Boundaries: Looking for Palestine,” are of Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, and Palestine’s transformation since the partition of 1948. By mirroring the cartography of these areas, assembling them to create new forms along with the negative shapes that result from their mirroring, I am referencing both the Reductionist and Systems approaches often used to understand conflict.

Reverse painting on glass backed with foil (often referred to as tinsel painting) has been the medium/process that I have used in this work. In my recent installation at the Southwest School of Art, I have made the map pieces out of pigmented, handmade paper that I pinned to a mirrored substrate with map pins. Together these pieces form an ornate oriental rug and map and suggest the possibility of movement and reconfiguration.

“Borders and Boundaries: Looking for Palestine” is a self-examination of the role of Western powers in shaping other parts of the world, and speaks to my personal experience as one of the Palestinian diaspora, an identity that still remains exotic and untouchable.

Mass Cultural Council is honored to support the work of individual artists. Fellows Notes is a monthly listing of the last news from awardees in our Artist Fellowships Program.

May 2017:

Hiding in Plain Sight: Folk Masters of Massachusetts showcase concert features past or current recipients of an Artist Fellowship or Traditional Arts Apprenticeship performing at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport (5/14, 5 PM).

Many superb poets, including numerous past Artist Fellows and Finalists, and taking part in the Massachusetts Poetry Festival (5/5-5/7, Salem, MA). Not to be missed: a reading by Mass Cultural Council Poetry Fellows Scott Challener, Aaron Krol, Richard Michelson, Sarah Sousa, and Elizabeth Witte (5/6, 2 PM), at the Peabody Essex Museum. Steven Barkhimer, John Kuntz, Melinda Lopez, and John Minigan all have plays published in the New England New Play Anthology (edited by Patrick Gabridge). An event featuring the book takes place at Porter Square Books (5/16, 7 PM).

Congratulations to Sarah Bliss and Allison Cekala, who are among the film artists attending the 2017 Flaherty Film Seminar as LEF New England Fellows.

Charles Coe's poem "Mnemonic" installed as part of Mass Poetry's Raining Poetry project

Charles Coe and Tanya Larkin are among the poets whose work is featured in Mass Poetry’s Raining Poetry project.

Samantha Fields, Matthew Gamber, Masako Kamiya, Justin Kimball, Kelly Popoff, Cristi Rinklin, and Daniela Rivera all received awards from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation Artist’s Resource Trust Fund.

Kenji Nakayama and Ben Sloat are exhibiting in Absent at the Lesley University VanDernoot Gallery (5/11-6/10, opening reception 5/11, 6-8 PM).

Elizabeth Alexander currently has work in the exhibition Deep Cuts: Contemporary Paper Cutting at Currier Museum of Art (thru 5/21). She has solo show, I May Not Be a Lion, at Hodges Taylor Art Consultancy (thru 6/18), with an artist talk 5/20, 10:30 AM-12 noon, moderated by Annie Carlano, Senior Curator of Craft, Design and Fashion at The Mint Museum. Work from her Heirloom series is currently featured in the touring State of the Art exhibitions from Crystal Bridges Art Museum.

Stacey Alickman has a solo exhibition, In Memory: works by Stacey Alickman, at Kingston Gallery (5/3-5/28, opening reception 5/5, 5:30-8:30 PM).

Steven Bogart directs Peerless for Company One Theatre (C1), performed at the Boston Public Library (thru 5-28, 7 PM). All tickets are pay-what-you-can in this production, produced in conjunction with the Library’s “All the City’s a Stage: A Season of Shakespeare.”

Sarah Braman is part of the group exhibition In the Abstract at MASS MoCA (opening reception 5/6, 5:30-7 PM).

John Gianvito screened his film Profit motive and the whispering wind at Harvard Film Archive (5/1, 7 PM), part of its Cinema of Resistance series.

James Heflin‘s debut poetry collection Krakatoa Picnic has been published by Hedgerow Books.

Dawn Kramer will perform in an event called From the Horse’s Mouth, a benefit for The Dance Complex (5/5 and 5/6).

Jesse Kreitzer‘s film Black Canaries received “Special Jury Recognition for Short Narrative Film” at the Ashland Independent Film Festival (AIFF). This marks the 8th film festival award for Black Canaries.

Mira T. Lee is part of The Strategic Writer panel for the Muse and the Marketplace Conference (5/7, 1-2:30 PM).

Danielle Legros Georges reads her poetry in the Brookline Poetry Series at the Brookline Public Library (5/21, 2 PM).

Mary Lum has an exhibition, Assembly (Lorem Ipsum), at MASS MoCA (thru 5/28).

Matthew Mazzotta currently has work at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum NYC in a show called By the People: Designing a Better America. Read an ArtSake article about his recent project, Cloud House.

Cecelia Raker‘s play La Llorona will be produced by Fresh Ink Theatre at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre (5/5-5/20).

Abraham Ravett‘s film Holding Hands with Ilse screened in the Massachusetts Multicultural International Film Festival at UMASS Amherst in April.

Marian Roth has a 20-year retrospective, On Bended Light, at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (5/5-7/16, opening reception 5/12, 6 PM).

Congratulations to Jim Shepard, who won the Rea Award, a $30,000 prize for a short story writer.

Leslie Sills has an exhibition of paintings, Sanctuary, at Catamount Arts in St. Johnsbury, Vermont (thru 6/25, artist talk 6/22, 6 PM).

Sarah Bliss curated and is presenting From the Farm at the Alchemy Film & Moving Image Festival in Scotland. From the Farm is a curated program of 13 films made at the Independent Imaging Retreat (aka Film Farm) offered in rural Ontario every summer by Canadian experimental filmmaker Philip Hoffman and his dedicated staff.

Ria Brodell has a solo show of paintings, Butch Heroes, at
Gallery Kayafas (3/3-4/8, opening reception 3/3, 5:30-8 PM). She’ll also be releasing the limited edition book Butch Heroes: Paintings by Ria Brodell, with book signing and panel discussion 3/18, 3 PM.

Kim Carlino has a solo exhibition, The Primary Line, (3/1-3/28), at the UMass Amherst Herter Art Gallery.

Lucien Castaing-Taylor and collaborator Véréna Paravel, who are among the Foster Prize Artists at the ICA Boston, will give an in-gallery Foster Talk (3/16, 7 PM).

Caleb Cole has a solo show of photography, To Be Seen, at Gallery Kayafas (3/3-4/8, opening reception 3/3, 5:30-8 PM).

Harriet Diamond has a new installation, Driven from their Homes, at the Oxbow Gallery (3/2-3/26, reception 3/10, 5-8 PM, artist talk 3/23, 7 PM).

Congratulations to Duy Doan, winner of the 2017 Yale Series of Younger Poets competition. The poet’s manuscript We Play a Game was selected by Series judge Carl Phillips.

Mary Jane Doherty is screening two of her early films, Gravity and Three Fish, as well as an excerpt of a new work, Sonic Boom Boom, as part of the DocYard Series at Brattle Theatre in Cambridge (3/20, 7 PM).

Andrew Haines has an exhibition of paintings, Distracted Driving, at Clark Gallery (thru 4/1, reception 3/4, 4:30-7 PM).

Shannon Heaton has a new podcast, Irish Music Stories, available on iTunes. This month, she performs in Portland, ME (3/17, 7 PM) and Medford, MA (3/18, 8 PM).

Joo Lee Kang has a solo show VictoriANimals at Gallery NAGA (3/3-3/25, opening reception 3/3, 6-8 PM).

Congratulations to Stefan Lanfer, whose play Prudence was selected to be part of a first ever reading of new plays at American Stage in Tampa, FL. Locally, the play will have public readings by the open theater project at Bella Luna Café (3/20) and by the Emerson Theatre Collaborative in CT (4/8) in April.

Stephanie Lubkowski‘s composition Right now, in a second will be performed by Transient Canvas at the Music Mansion in Providence, RI (3/3, 8 PM) and at the Equilibrium Concern Series at Third Life Studio in Somerville (3/4, 8 PM). Also, the Charles River Wind Ensemble will premiere all three movements of Stephanie’s wind ensemble piece Circles Circling at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum and Library in Lexington (3/13, 3 PM).

Richard Michelson‘s children’s book Fascinating: The Life of Leonard Nimoy was awarded the 2017 Sydney Taylor Silver Medal from Association of Jewish Librarians and a 2016 Junior Library Guild Gold Medal. His just-published picture book The Language of Angels received a 2017 Junior Library Guild Gold Medal. Richard will reading from my work in Seoul, South Korea (3/30) and at the Poetry Center at PCCC in Paterson NJ along with Mark Doty (4/1).

Nathalie Miebach has an artist talk/concert at the Clay Center for Arts and Sciences in Charleston, WV (3/22, 5-7 PM). It will will include musical performances by composers Mischa Salkind-Pearl and Matthew Jackfert, who have both written pieces about Nathalie’s work. Also this month, she’ll present artist talks at Winchester High School and Abington High School.

Stephen Mishol has a solo exhibition, Place at the Neiman Center at Columbia University School of the Arts (thru 3/17). His work is also featured in DRAW/Boston at the Massachusetts College of Art (thru 3/4).

Congratulations to Ethan Murrow, whose children’s book The Whale, co-created with Vita Murrow, was selected for the Longlist for the 2017 Kate Greenaway Medal.

Anne Neely is in the group exhibition Thinking About Water: Artists Reflect (3/22-6/30, opening reception 3/22, 7-9 PM) at The Metropolitan Waterworks Museum in Boston.

Brad Nelson has a solo exhibition This Tells Me Where I Am, at frosch&portmann in New York City (3/0-4/23, opening reception 3/9, 6-8 PM).

Masha Obolensky‘s play Marvelous Fruit will be read at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre (3/19, 7 PM).

Gabriel Polonsky will screen and hold a director’s talk for his film Release from Reason (3/11, 3-5 PM), in conjunction with the Life: from life at room83 Spring Gallery. The documentary, currently in-progress, is about the life and work of Boston Expressionist painter Arthur Polonsky (the filmmaker’s father).

Monica Raymond recently returned from a three-week residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, where she showed work as part of an exhibit of Erasure Texts and read new poems and performed improvised poetry and music as part of INsideOUT (3/9). She will be reading poems from the sequence A Walk on Norfolk Street (set in Cambridge 2013, around the Boston Marathon bombings) at the Brandeis Women’s Studies Research Center (3/28, 3 PM), part of a daylong symposium Women’s Sense of Place.

Shelley Reed has a solo exhibition, A Curious Nature, at Fitchburg Art Museum (thru 6/4, opening reception 3/12, 2-5 PM).

Tara Sellios has a solo exhibition of photography, Testimony, at Blue Sky Gallery in Portland OR (3/2-4/2, reception 3/2, 6-9 PM, artist talk 3/3, 12 PM).

Laurel Sparks is among the artists exhibiting in Witches at September Gallery in Hudson, NY (3/18-5/7, opening reception 3/18, 6-8 PM).

Cam Terwilliger‘s as yet unpublished novel Yet Wilderness Grew in My Heart is the winner of the 2017 Caledonia Novel Award.

Sarah Wentworth‘s photograph Rugosa Window, is one of the pieces in the Maud Morgan Art Center Chandler Gallery‘s 2017 Small Works Salon (3/20-4/14, reception 4/2, 3-5 PM). The exhibition was juried by gallery owner Howard Yezerski.

Kris Willcox‘s essay Love and Compost will soon be published in the Portland Review.

Evan Ziporyn was featured in WBUR’s ARTery for his orchestral version of David Bowie’s album Blackstar.

Jenine Sheroes, THAW (2015), site-specific installation at at Jamaica Pond in Boston, Massachusetts

Sonia Almeida and Lucien Castaing-Taylor are among the artists recognized by the ICA Boston James and Audrey Foster Prize 2017. Their work will part of the ICA’s Foster Prize exhibition (2/16-7/9).

Samantha Fields, Andrew Mowbray, and Bob Oppenheim have work in Stitch: Syntax/Action/Reaction at the New Art Center in Newton (2/16-3/31, reception 2/16, 6-8 PM). The exhibition is part of the Curatorial Opportunities Program; Samatha Fields co-curated the exhibition with Jessica Burko.

Dana Filibert and Naoe Suzuki are among the artists exhibiting in Cloudlands at the Albany International Airport (thru 7/31, reception 2/17 5:30-7:30 PM).

Kenji Nakayama and Ben Sloat are among the artists in the exhibition All That Glitters Is Not Gold at Drive-by Projects (thru 3/28).

Alexandra Anthony‘s film Lost in the Bewilderness had a theatrical run at Alkyonis New Star Cinema in Athens, Greece. The run was extended 11 more days than originally planned and opened at a second theatre, New Studio Art Cinema, as well.

Karl Baden has a solo exhibit of recently rediscovered prints, Thermographs 1976, at Miller Yezerski Gallery (2/11-3/14, reception and gallery talk 2/11, 3-5 PM).

Mary Bucci McCoy has a solo exhibition, Terra Recognita at Jane Deering Gallery in Gloucester (thru 2/26). She’s also exhibiting in Combined at Gray Contemporary in Houston (thru 2/18).

Kim Carlino has a solo exhibition, The Primary Line, at the UMass Amherst Herter Gallery (2/28-3/27, reception 3/1, 5-7 PM). She’s also recently launched a new website.

Vico Fabbris had a painting, Azumacea, featured on Linda Hoffman’s Apples, Art, and Spirit Blog.

Kieran Jordan has opened a new dance studio space in Hyde Park. She’ll have a New Studio Open House (2/26, 12-4 PM), with live music and pop-up performances.

Rania Matar is exhibiting her photography series Invisible Children at PhotoMed Liban in Beirut (thru 2/8). The series was recently reviewed by Hyperallergic and Photograph Magazine. She will also exhibit in the group exhibition Aftermath: The Fallout of War – America and the Middle East at The Gund Gallery at Kenyon College (thru 4/20). Rania is artist-in-residence at Kenyon College this coming semester, thanks to a Mellon Foundation supported artist residency. She’s also exhibiting in Becoming at RayKo PhotoCenter (thru 2/21) and Outspoken: Seven Women Photographers at the de Menil Gallery at Groton School.

Richard Michelson‘s picture book Fascinating has been selected for as a Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People 2017 by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and the Children’s Book Council.

Nathalie Miebach has work in two exhibitions opening this month: Art of the Weather at the Clay Center for Arts and Sciences in Charleston, WV (2/4-8/15), and Crooked Data: (Mis)Information in Contemporary Art at University of Richmond Museum, (2/7-5/5).

Monica Raymond‘s short play Hijab (with Adrianjne Krystansky) will have a reading at the Brandeis Women’s Studies Research Center (2/16, 12:30 PM). It’s part of a program, HIJAB and Notes From the Field, that will discuss the cultural significance of women’s veiling around the world. Also, Monica’s monologue Ernesto had a staged reading at Theater Iati (NYC) in January.

Shelley Reed has a solo exhibition, A Curious Nature, at Fitchburg Art Museum (2/12-6/4). Her painting Predator/Prey (after Oudry) will also be the fulcrum of the group exhibition A Feast of Beasts (2/12-9/3).

Renee Ricciardi is the curator of The Uncertainty Principle, an exhibition about “Chance, Wonder, & Quantum Mysteries by Emerging New England Photographers” at the Fort Point Arts Community Gallery (2/8-2/22, reception 2/16, 5:30-7:30 PM).

Anna Ross has a poem, Back Porch Aubade, published on Harvard Review Online.

Sage Schmett exhibits her sculptural work in Hoarder Vacui at the Harvard Ed Portal Crossings Gallery (thru 2/24).

Jenine Shereos has two solo exhibitions in MA: Thaw, at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston (thru 3/8, reception 2/25, 5-7 PM); and Im/material: Cloth in Collaboration with Nature, at UMass Amherst Hampden Gallery (2/26-3/27, reception 2/26, 2-4 PM).

Deb Todd Wheeler, along with exhibiting in Loud and Clear (thru 2/7) at Miller Yezerski Gallery, will perform with her band The LENNYcollective the Lily Pad in Cambridge (2/4, 8 PM).

Jung Yun is a finalist for the 2016 Barnes and Noble Discover Awards.

Elizabeth Alexander and Randal Thurston are exhibiting in Paper and Blade: Modern Paper Cutting at Fuller Craft Museum (thru 7/31).

Rick Ashley, Claire Beckett, and Kelly Carmody all have work in Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition The Outwin: American Portraiture Today. The exhibition runs thru 1/8/2017 at the National Portrait Gallery, and then travels elsewhere. Both Rick and Claire have been featured by the Gallery in blog posts.

Frank Egloff and Matthew Gamber both have solo exhibitions at Gallery Kayafas (4/15-5/21).

MCC Poetry Fellows Richard Michelson, Sarah Sousa, and Michael Teig are reading in an event curated by another Fellow, Karen Skolfield, at Pelham Library (4/27, 7 PM).

Alexandra Anthony‘s documentary Lost in the Bewilderness screened at The University of Roehampton (London) and the Moraitis School (Athens, Greece) in March.

Karen Aqua‘s animated films will be screened and celebrated at a special event at Harvard Film Archive, Sacred Ground & Perpetual Motion – The Animated Cosmos of Karen Aqua (4/9, 7 PM).

Claire Beckett has a solo exhibit of her series The Converts at Carroll and Sons Art Gallery, mid-April through the end of May.

Pelle Cass has work from his Selected People series in three books: Photoviz (Gestalten, Berlin); Deleuze and the City (a scholarly book which features an entire chapter based around a discussion of Pelle’s photo of Quincy Market; and Langford’s Basic Photography. He will have work in UNM Art Museum/Center/516 Arts’ PhotoSummer festival. Also, he will have a summer fellowship at Yaddo.

Mary Jane Doherty‘s documentary Secundaria was released on DVD and streaming.

Steve Edwards has a flash fiction story called Sometimes My Father Comes Back from the Dead in SmokeLong Quarterly.

Chris Frost is in the show Danger Play at Lens Gallery (thru 4/22, opening reception 4/1, 6-8:30 PM).

Ralf Yusuf Gawlick‘s new string quartet composition Imagined Memories will have its world premiere as the musical centerpiece of a Boston College symposium, The Kurdish Question: Ethnicity, Identity, and Integration. The work, commissioned by the Vienna-based Hugo Wolf Quartet, premieres 4/28, 7:30 PM in St. Mary’s Chapel at Boston College (free admission) and will be followed by a performance at Carnegie Hall in NYC (4/29, 8 PM).

Jan Johnson is a Fulbright Scholar this year at the University of Dundee, the Scottish University.

Rania Matar is exhibiting at The National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, DC as part of She Who Tells a Story: Women Photographers from Iran and the Arab World (4/8-6/31), which originated at the MFA Boston.

Joshua Meyer is the first artist to have a solo exhibition at the new Matter & Light Gallery in Boston (4/1-4/30, artists reception 4/1, 6-9 PM).

Richard Michelson announced that he has an upcoming book about Leonard Nimoy (Nimoy’s visual art is represented by Richard Michelson Gallery) called Fascinating, to be published in September. Richard has poetry readings this month at AWP (4/1 and 4/2), the Split This Rock Conference in Washington DC (4/16), and at the Pelham Library (4/27, see above).

Lisa Olivieri‘s film Blindsided will be having its Boston Premiere as part of the The National Association of Social Workers (MA Chapter) Film Series at Belmont’s Studio Cinema (4/3, 2 PM).

Jendi Reiter‘s debut novel Two Natures will be published by Saddle Road Press in September.

Nick Rodrigues created the interactive installation CAR-A-OKE and the Auto Umwelt The New Children’s Museum in San Diego, on view thru Spring 2017. He contributed to The Felt Book, a collaborative publication featuring a collection of home remedies created by 90+ invited artists.

Anna Ross has a new chapbook, Figuring, to be released by Bull City Press in May. The book was the Editor’s Selection in the 2015 Frost Place Chapbook Competition. Anna will have her first reading from the book at the AWP conference in LA.

Leslie Sills has an exhibit of figurative sculpture Personnages at Colo Colo Gallery in New Bedford (4/23-5/12, reception 4/30 5-8 PM).

TRIIIBE, aka the identical triplets Alicia, Kelly, and Sara Casilio along with photographer Cary Woliknsky, will give a gallery talk at Fitchburg Art Museum 4/24, 1:30 PM, in conjunction with their exhibition TRIIIBE: same difference (thru 6/5).

Sarah Wentworth has more than a dozen photos from her Untitled (fishline) series in the 3-person show Caprices at the Simmons College Trustman Gallery (thru 4/14). The fishline series features performed photos centered on a costume made of knit fishing line, taken on Deer Isle, Maine.

Jung Yun is getting terrific reviews for her new novel Shelter. She reads this month at Northshire Books in Vermont (4/1, 7 PM) and Amherst Books (4/19, 7 PM). Both events are with author James Scott.

It’s a Leap Year, so there’s an extra day this month to enjoy the awesomeness of Massachusetts artists!

For a taste, we offer news from past Fellows and Finalists of MCC’s Artist Fellowships.

Two exhibitions at the University of New Hampshire Museum of Art feature past MCC awardees: Sophia Ainslie and Cristi Rinklin join Nathan Miner in the three-person exhibition, Groundswell, while Shelley Reed and Randall Thurston exhibit in Natural Wonder. Both shows run thru 4/3.

Elizabeth Alexander and Randall Thurston are both exhibiting in Paper and Blade: Modern Paper Cutting at the Fuller Craft Museum (thru 7/24).

Deborah Abel of the Deborah Abel Dance Company recently returned home from a 3 city tour of India where she gave Bhakti Modern Dance master classes. See pictures from a master class at Kalakshetra Conservatory of Music and Dance in Chennai India in January.

Kati Agócs was recently featured on WBUR’s The ARTery for a recent concert of her work. Kati’s new CD The Debrecen Passion was featured by WQXR as its album of the week.

Allison Cekala‘s solo show Salt Mountain at the Howard Art Project was listed as Cate McQaid’s highlights from 2015, and her photo show Salt is on view at the Mayor’s Gallery at City Hall (thru 2/29). Allison’s project Fundir (which she submitted to win her 2015 fellowship) is a video piece tracking salt gathered from northern Chile and transported to Boston for winter road maintenance. She spoke on a segment in PRI’s The World about the road salt harvesting and transport process.

Alexander Chee‘s new novel Queen of the Night is published this month. He was interviewed on Late Night with Seth Meyers!

Georgie Friedman‘s video installation Slippery Slope is on view at the Wold Atrium of Union College in Schenectady, NY (thru 11/2016).

Matthew Gamber‘s Grammar, a survey of recent photography works, is on view at College of the Holy Cross Cantor Art Gallery (thru 2/27).

John Gianvito curated the four-person exhibition High Low at the Fort Point Arts Community Gallery (2/23-3/29, opening reception 3/3 5:30-7:30 PM).

Rebecca Kaiser Gibson was interviewed by Mass Poetry about her new book Opinel. She has upcoming readings at The Blacksmith House (2/22, with Michael Morse) and Boston Athenaeum (4/27).

Sean Greene is in the 20th Anniversary Exhibition at William Baczek Fine Arts (thru 3/12), and he’s among the artists who worked with a chair to create a new work, in Take a Seat at the UMass Amherst Museum of Contemporary Art (thru 2/27, silent auction 2/28).

Marky Kaufmann has a solo show, Landscapes and Prayers at Griffin Museum’s Digital Silver Imaging Gallery (thru 3/11, opening reception 2/18, 6-8 PM). Also, Marky curated and is exhibiting in Outspoken, a show of six female photographers (including Rania Matar), at Middlesex School in Concord.

Caroline Klocksiem has poetry in the latest issue of Opon.

Daniel Kornrumpf is exhibiting in Extrapolation at the Trustman Art Gallery at Simmons College (2/4-3/4, reception 2/4, 5-7 PM).

Joy Ladin recently received a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowships, and she was featured in an interview on the NEA’s Art Works Blog.

Siobhan Landry was featured on Neighbor Media for a new film project exploring the abolitionist history of this region, specifically Georgetown, MA.

Sandy Litchfield‘s solo show Filterscape is on view at Carroll and Sons Gallery (thru 2/27).

Melinda Lopez (featured in the 40 Years of Fellowships video, above) has a new play, Back the Night at Boston Playwrights Theatre (2/4-2/28).

Rania Matar has gotten advance reviews for her new photography book L’Enfant-Femme from The Guardian, ARTslant, LensCulture, and The Daily Telegraph.

Cynthia Maurice is in the two-person show Out the Window & Around the Town at Brickbottom Art Gallery in Somerville (thru 2/27).

Rachel Mello co-curated and is exhibiting in the Sketchbook Show 2016 at the Nave Gallery (thru 3/3).

Vanessa Michalak recently accepted a position for the Spring semester as the “Emerging Artist in Residence” at Penn State, Altoona. She has an upcoming Exhibition in the McLanahan Gallery on campus (3/17-4/3).

Nathalie Miebach has pieces in two shows that are part of the State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now exhibition: Minneapolis Institute of Art (2/18-5/29) and Telfair Museum in Savannah, GA (2/19-9/4).

Anne Neely‘s Water Stories: Conversations in Paint and Sound, created with Halsey Burgund, is traveling from its original setting at the Museum of Science Boston to Old Dominion University Baron and Ellin Gordon Gallery in Norfolk, VA (thru 3/13).

Cecelia Raker is a 2016 PlayLab Fellow at Company One Theatre in Boston.

Kathryn Ramey has a new book, Experimental Filmmaking – BREAK THE MACHINE. There will be a book launch event on 2/4, 6-8 PM, at City Feed and Supply in Jamaica Plain, including a hand-drawn film workshop by AgX Film Collective.

Monica Raymond‘s play A to Z is a finalist for the Association for Theatre in Higher Education Award of Excellence in Playwriting.

Cristi Rinklin is among the artists exhibiting in Collaboration: The Artist and the Land at the Sharon Arts Center at the New Hampshire Institute of Art (thru 2/20).

Anna Ross wrote a moving tribute to C.D. Wright for the Mass Poetry blog.

Samuel Rowlett has a solo exhibition entitled Landscape Painting in the Expanded Field as part of the O P E N exhibition series at the Julian Scott Memorial Gallery at Johnson State College. At a gallery talk related to the exhibition, Samuel conducted an interactive digital painting session, with students and visitors using smartphones as both palette and canvas!

Mary Sherman‘s Eri, After Dark was performed at Drive-By Projects in January.

Sarah Slifer Swift is embarking on the second year of her Trident Live Art Series at Trident Gallery in Gloucester MA. The series is a platform for local and regional performance-based artists to show current projects in a salon setting. The upcoming show on 2/6, 7 PM features a new duet by Swift and cellist Kristen Miller.

Sarah Sousa (one of the brand new Poetry Fellows!) is featured in Mass Poetry’s Poem of the Moment, with her poem Epistle.

Laurel Sparks has a solo show, Magic Squares, at Sarah Lawrence College Barbara Walters Gallery (thru 3/13). There will be an artist lecture on 2/16, 4 PM.

Lisa Nilsson: Spell-binding Art in Paper

Creating intricate works using a traditional paper technique called quilling, Lisa Nilsson doesn’t mind working slowly. But when her spell-binding art went viral, her career went through a swift transformation.

Lisa’s work was recently featured in the MCC Awardees in Crafts and Sculpture/Installation/New Genres exhibit at the New Art Center in Newton.

The Massachusetts Cultural Council is celebrating 40 Years of Fellowships by sharing video interviews with some of the extraordinary artists who have received Artist Fellowships since the program’s inception in 1975.
