The Artist Residency program at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston supports craftspeople by giving them an opportunity to work in its Seaport studio. Adrienne Sloane describes her experience as a 2017 artists in residence.
I was very pleased to be chosen as artist-in-residence at the Boston Society Of Arts and Crafts during its inaugural year in its new Seaport location. In residence from May through July, it was a refreshing experience with unique opportunities to interact with the public. Away from my daily routine, I experimented with felted jewelry, a new direction for me.
Equally exciting, I was able to engage with visitors in occasional lively conversations over some of my larger political work which I also finished and installed while there. I set my own schedule, attended some of the wonderful Thursday night events as well as offering programming of my own. The 400 sq ft resident space looks out over the gallery and my time there bridged two inspirational shows.
The Society of Arts and Crafts accepts applications on a rolling basis and offers a monthly stipend. All in all, it is a really a great opportunity for local artists looking to expand their visibility and spend time with SAC staff and others in a space that highly values the contribution of the arts.

Adrienne,
It was a pleasure to have you in the gallery. You really exemplified what our program was designed to be: an opportunity for our guests to see an artist at work and learn a bit about materials, techniques, and concept. We had so much fun with you!
I especially loved our conversations about politics and perspectives and your artwork so beautifully tells a story about the here and now. Our guests loved you!
Thanks for this lovely write-up.
